Hello all. I recently tried to rack my brew for the first time (seven days in and some airlock activity) and all did not go according to plan. I thought I was being a smarty-trousers by using a cut off tip of a caulking gun as a nozzle over my tap which then fit neatly into my hose. Some of you are probably laughing already (it seemed like a good idea at the time) but suffice to say a little bit (well actually quite a bit) of oxygen may have become involved. I managed to get things working a bit better towards the end but I fear it was too little, too late. So, in language even someone who would attempt the above, can understand, what is the best way attach the hose to the tap (given that they are the same diameter)? One post said to cut a piece off your bottling tool (tube?) but it seems a bit drastic to ruin such a useful item. I avoided buying hose that would go over the tap as I thought this would be too thick. Any ideas? Also what is the prognosis for my beer (Classic Aussie bitter style with some POR Hops) is there anything I can do to retrieve the situation. To add insult to injury I am having trouble locating the o-ring seal on my 2nd fermenter and can't get another for about 24 hours. The lid is on but airlock is dead. You can see I need help

my racking hose fits inside the tap, nice snug fit!

Thanks all for your swift replies. I have obviously perfectly created the problem I was trying to avoid. If a snug fit in or over the tap does the trick I will trot down to the hardware (with the tap) and find some hose that will work. Any members of the brew recovery unit had any thoughts on the plight of my current batch? Or will I just have to be reminded of my stupidity with every sip?

Got some help with the botteling once,he ment well but the shaking the shit out of the fementer didn't help.The beer came out good in the end but took 3 months to do so and as it was a wheat this is quite a while as they can be drinkable in a month.So bottel or keg and age it well all should be good.

If you are adding sugar to your bottles for carbonation then you probably need not worry to much about some additional oxygen sneaking in! You will get true secondary fermentation in the bottle as you have added extra fermentables to the now finished beer, which of course, stoill has some actiive and happy yeast in it. The yeast will chomp up the sugar and at the same time scavenge what little extra oxygen you have added, remember that your long neck already had 750ml of air in it, complete withoxygen !..

Sorry, but what the hell is that website about... it may be right or wrong but frankly I simply have no idea what it is going on about. Feel free to explain Kurtz... I'm assuming this has something to do with your passion for infection detection.
