KEEPING RECORDS

Post by dab123 »

Twas interesting to note how many H.Brewers keep records or
log books on their brews?
even more interesting would be the most vivid comment in
your brew book ?
therefore I pose the question what is the most traumatic or
illuminating entry in your book ?

As a new brewer my brew book is fairly short. However, the most impressive entry is my Honey Ale (thread in the "making beer" forum") and it didn't turn out as I would have liked it to. I adapted a recipe and went to a lot of trouble brewing that beer, and while it's not a terrible beer, It's not close to what I had hoped it would be. It's all a learning curve. Half the reason for keeping records is to be able to point out what went wrong. :D

The happiest log in my book would probably be the one refering to my first brew (which was ready right on new years eve, how lucky do you get?). It was a Coopers Real Ale and everyone loved it, all my mates who drink beer liked it, all my mates who didn't usually drink beer liked it, all my female mates liked it, my old man liked it, my girl friends old man liked it. I only followed the recipe on the kit but it's certainly made me love HB in a hurry. Brewing up an identical one for my birthday. Real Ale is a damn nice drop in my opinion, though I would be very interested in hearing what the fellas here think of it. I have no problem in admitting that they know infinatley more about good beer than I. I'm here to learn.
Cheers mate,

- Jim

Brew No: 23
Brew: Morgans, Yukon Brown Smoked Ale
Additives: Body Brew (Dextrose 600g, Maltodextrin 400g)
Comments: Very much like bacon cooked on the BBQ

I was told by the HBS on purchasing the tin that it tasted like bacon on the BBQ and they were right.

Yes it was beer unfortunately. On opening the can it smelt like a BBQ and on tasting it tasted like bacon cooked on the BBQ even had others taste it to confirm the taste.

The only time I could drink it was while I was cooking a BBQ.

If you want something different and simple get a Morgan's Yukon Brown Smoked Ale.

dab,
Keeping a log and making lables for the brews is all part of the fun of brewing I recon.
I guess the original intention was to remake successful brews from the log but I've yet to repeat myself and am still experimenting after 21 brews.
My memory for the names of hops and different grains and malts is not good enough without a log to save me.
No memorable logs only memorable drinking sessions  8)
Cheers

i don't really write many tasting notes but i log ingredients, method, temps etc incase i ever want to brew another batch of the same (or stay the hell away from it!).
My tasting notes are limited to basic style, flavour comparisons/observations and a simple 'brew again' or 'never brew again' type statement after each extended period of time (incase a eber matures into soemthing nice).
