Bottle Priming

Post by Beerpig »

Doing the shopping the other day I noticed boxes of the pre-packaged sugar (sugar sticks). These are 3gm per packet.

Would I be safe to assume that one packet per stubbie & two per long neck would be the go?

Have been using a scoop, which is a pain when it gets wet

Sugar packets are more expensive, but we are only talking cents (and even cheaper when free from work)

Any thoughts or comments are welcome

Cheers

yeh man that is correct.

But it is too expensive and still fiddlier then using carb drops or bulk priming.

Out of curiousity I just primed a CPA with the sugar sachets (sugar sticks) 3gm each

Very easy, will do it again

They are free from all good coffee shops & workplace cribrooms

Interesting idea, but $2.50 for carb drops, or $2 for glucose won't break my budget.

Let us know how they gas up.

From someone who has only just started racking and bulk priming...if convenience is your driving force you just can't beat bulk priming. Sure, I balked at it for years....it's a damn sight easier to measure one batch ofsugar than nearly 30! While you spend your timetearing the ends off sugar packets I'm putting my capped bottles in the shed.

Your idea has merit if you don't want to bulk prime...but I'm converted!

:-) One simple measurement, dissolve, and bottle. That's as easy as it gets.

I found it quicker than the measuring scoop method. No scooping & spilling sugar, no getting the scoop wet in bottle necks

It was also good for solving the problem of foaming in the grolsch swing top bottles. Fill the bottle first, then whack a sugar stick in & cap immediately. You need to do it fairly quickly, but managed not to have any spills

On bulk priming - another fermenter to sanatise & wash, I'm just too slack

It is soooooooooooooo easy - just get a straight sided bucket style fermenter & a length of PVC tube. It cuts down the sediment & if you ever have a problem beer you will know about it then.
It is really only a quick sanitise it will need before and after - my primer doesn't get dirty because the beer isnt in there for that long.
It cuts down on potential hand grenades as well.

Just use a funnel - put in the neck of the bottle. The scoop never gets wet, you don't spill sugar everywhere, and it makes it much quicker.

Beerpig,
there is an alternative - see this thread. http://www.homebrewandbeer.com/forum/vi ... php?t=1302
Bulk priming is the way for multiple bottle sizes, but this method is also convenient, next to no mess and the cleanup is bugger all. Mix ahead of time and bottling time will be cut quite abit.
If your interested, I can send you the details. Cost is $15 delivered, and the only cost from there is your sugar.
I'm waiting on a couple of the guys from this forum to finish trialling, but so far all feedback has been favourable. Certainly better than the scoop!

Beerpig; the sugar sticks you refer to are called p/c (portion control) sugar and are $25 for 1000 from your local food wholesaler(no that is not a typo)

That would make them cheaper than carbonation drops on a dollar to weight basis
