Redoak

Post by Cat »

Was anyone else at the Redoak beer tasting at Purvis this Thursday? For $5 we got to sample the Hefeweizen, honey ale, organic pale ale, vienna lager, bock, Christmas cheer and Wee heavy (as well as a couple of cheeses)

They were all extremely tasty. My favourite was the Christmas Cheer foro the sheer novelty value of it - it smelt exactly like Christmas Fruit cake. Yum!

Unfortunately he was a little tightlipped about what went into his brews, but still, an enjoyable experience. I was surprised when he talked about some of his brews, how they had 5 or 6 different types of malt in it. Very complex flavours. I recommend everyone go and check them out, although they are a tad expensive.

They are great beers. The Xmas cheer is one of my favourites too - along with the English strong ale, & Irish Red.

I was fortunate enough to try their Special Reserve barley wine recently. Without a doubt one of the most balanced high alc. beer I've ever had. Sensational... & so it should be for $15 for a 50ml serve :o

& I went back for a second. It's not everyday you get to try a barleywine here in Oz... especially one that took out the grand champion beer award at the recent AIBA's.

They has a tasting of the Redoak Vienna lager at my local last year.

I had had several tooheys Olds at that stage and thought that Redoak was absolute filth after the black. But then again I also had the flu so my taste buds were probably shot.

$15 for 50ml?

In the world of high rollers here, guys!

Remy Martin XO Cognac is available at Dan's for about the same money!

Along with many high roller Champers, etc.

Top flight Bordeaux & Burgundys can be out in stratosphere territory by comparison, but these are the extremes.

$15 for 50ml?
Cheers,

Pacman

Sorry Chris. Just hadn't thought of any brewed beverages being in High Roller Territory.

But there again, why not?

$15 for 50ml! Awesome!

I'm sure there are many people out there that want to try that too, but can't afford a whole bottle. Having a spare $15 on the other hand seems a lot more likley

So where are the tasting notes chris, and would it be good enough to buy say 750ml of it?

It cannot be bought in a bottle.

It is one of the most balanced beers I've ever had. The aroma was great (we sat with our noses over the glasses waiting for it to warm up) Has that darker crystal, currant/raisin/dried fruit, malt taste. & fairly stong on the oak flavours. I didn't pick up much hop bitterness or flavour. For a 12%+ beer I didn't really taste the alcohol. & it was a lot drier than I expected it would be. Tasted very similar to a nice rich darker muscat (without the heavy cloying mouthfeel) than a beer in my opinion.

Do you think the price you are paying effects your judgement somewhat? Kind of like a placebo?
