I have 2 and they are really simple and cheap. Depends on how much you'd like to spend  One of mine is a metal backed thermometer for $10, and the other is a digital stick thermometer as pictured at the bottom of this link for $12 http://craftbrewer.com.au/index.php?pag ... &Itemid=29
Both are adequate for my needs, and I'm fond of the digital stick because it reads quickly and is so easily transferred from one pot to another.

Mine is a dial type bi-metal. Picture Would recomend it. Was previously using a glass type but was slow to change and hard to read.

Through the side or the top is fine. Depends how you want to view it. Easy to go through the top because you don't have to worry about making it water tight, but then you might want to view it side on  Those bi-metal dial thermometers are nice and you can read them from across the other side of the room, but they cost more.
