Difficulty drinking commercial beer

Post by randb »

Even my worst HB is better than the best commecial beer anyone else having this drama?? I will admit I have been drinking my homeys all day. I had a 6 pack of Coopers PA today and I still prefer my beer to it. Is that normal or is there definetly something different about commercisal beer??

I agree randb. Most readily available commercial beer (with the exception of Coopers Sparkling and Pale Ales) gives me the irrits these days. I think its because of the preservatives in it, ends up with kind of a metallic icky flavour to my taste buds.

I was recently in the Czech Republic and had cause to drink many a Pilsner Urquell. There weren't any preservatives in that and I hereby solemnly declare it to be the best beer in the known universe. :D :D :D

I found myself in the bottle shop today when buying some spirits telling a guy purchasing a block of Tooheys Red that he was crazy and should brew his own. He actually said that he had been thinking about it for quite some time and needed to hear from someone who brews their own that HB was worthwhile! I was expecting a fist in the mouth and got the opposite!

I experience this every time I drink commercial beer after a few of my own brand.

I'm the same way now too. I used to drink all sorts of dodgy Australian beers, but now I find myself only buying Coopers and Tooheys Old if I'm buying from the bottlo, and Guinness or Old if I'm at the pub.

I know many here like the Old, but I have to admit I find it has a nasty chemically taste now, after a couple of batches of Coopers Dark and Stout from the Malty brewery. I can't go it any more.

Tried Guiness extra stout in a can the other day. Same story.

Coopers sparkling still puts a smile on my face however...

I reckon it might have something to do with sugar in the brews. Even the Coopers Pale Ale I reckon isn't as good as a nice malty ale brewed in my lounge room. Coopers Sparkling is awesome though.

I haven't been into homebrew for that long but even I find my tastes have changed, that most commercial brews are far too watery and light when compaired to my HB. And what suprised me is that I prefer that my homebrew is less carbonated than commercials.

I've got a mate who only ever drinks coopers pale. i gave him one of my hb pales i brewed just using the coopers kit and reccomended brew enhancer (this was only my 2nd brew) and he actually preferred it to the real thing - a fair compliment coming from a non homebrewer

I've gotten terrible as well. I only seem to buy Coopers Sparkling or Tooheys Old, although I still like some of the boutique brews as well.

I do a test every few weeks, just to make sure that I am not losing the plot.

I buy a bottle or two, or a six pack, and if entertaining maybe a carton, of reputedly good quality beer. So far, this method has assured me that my HB Quality Assurance Standards remain ahead of even the best of those of commercial brewers.

Also enables me to make sometimes meaningless comments on the "beers you buy" forum.

I,ve tasted around 50 commercial lagers and they all taste the same. The only flavour difference youget is with belgian ales and coopers ales.Bitburger german beer tastes like shit, and so does leffe blonde, which is from belgium.

Hi All,

Could this phenenom not be simply that with your own beer it is 'real' beer.

ie. No chemicals etc as per Germany's beer purity law. And of course actual flavour etc.

Australians are brought up on crap beer and beleive that is what 'beer' tastes like.

It doesn't take much exposure to 'real' beer (homebrew in this case) to develop a taste for something better and then regard all swill as exactly that, swill!

I always preferred better beers (Dutchy, Danish, some Asian and others before they were all brewed in Melb) but since starting brewing a few years ago I have found myself really apreciating the truly fine beers of the world, some of witch are Aussie like LCPA, most Coopers etc etc. Unfortunately most come from Germany or Belgium. Most German wheat beers are dreamy...

Local super swill brewerys I think have lost the plot. You thing Carlton draft and VB are bad? Try the new brews like Hahn Pal Ale. Jeezus!! It is filth, watery tastleless filth at that.

Well brewed home brew is the answer (and the occassional German brew for reference).

Have fun, Andrew.

Nice post mate and i totally agree, dont think i need to add anything apart from the fact that even though it actually does taste better than commercial stuff it adds alot to the taste just knowing that you made it yourself ( bit of self satisfaction) and that you didnt need to sell the family to afford it
