Got the orange, "Clear and Bright" Lager and German Purity Law....I said Malt instead of Barley, and I was drinking a bottle that actually had the law on it

Butterscotch is from diacytal which you don't want in your beer so it shouldn't be released because it shouldn't be there in the first place. Additioanally I have brewed with oranges and I can smell them when I open a beer that has them in.
Tasting your beer at room temp will allow you to identify any flaws in your beer so IMHO you should always taste your beer at room temp. Then you can chill it down and quaff it.
