Calcium sulphate

Post by lethaldog »

Otherwise known as gypsum, to those AG brewers out there, where would be the best place to get some of this from, i have heard garden suppliers have it but in big bags only and i would never need that much

Funnily enough I need some for tomorrow and was thinking the same thing! I was just gonna buy whatever the smallest quantity was from the local garden supply store.

It is also used in drywall and plaster so maybe Bunning or the like? I will let you know how I go tomorrow arvo.
Prost and happy brewing!

You could try ringing a health food shop and asking them. I'm not 100% sure that many would stock gypsum but some stores do stock Dolomite (calcium carbonate + magnesium) made for human consumption. So, it could be worth a try.
Prost!!!!!!!!!!!

How much did you pay Rob?

I am looking at a bottle of it right now, 500g worth. 99.99%.

$3 for 100g. I got all the other brewing salts mentioned in how to brew at the same time.

I picked up a 10 kilo bag from Bunning for $7. It is 85% gypsum and the rest is calcium and sulfate which are needed anyway so it should work fine.

10 kg  I just looked at notes I have in an old brewing book from `92, I was using 1--2 teaspoons in a brew so you should be able to leave what`s left in your will. :)
I was using it in a lot of different beers then. Now I can`t even remember why :(
Whatever, it didn`t do any harm, no one complained.

I bought a kilo of plaster of paris from bunnings

cost me a few dollars

don't seem to have had any issues

i wonder it all the rumours about the impurities being bad for you are true

It's pretty much the only addition i make to batches lately

I also have a bit of calcium carbonate for batches that require it

Though i prefer my beer bitter so it's sulfates to accentuate the bitterness

Wollongong has very soft water

Cheers

And on a completely irreverent and useless note, why not use a kilo of the plaster.....should cure the runs forever, once it sets.
