100g of Amarillo

Post by DJ »

I have a Coopers Draught Can, 1.5 kg Light Liquid Malt, 100g of Amarillo and some yeast..

How much amarillo would you suggest and at what intervals?

I'm looking for a knock your hoppy socks off beer for my keg..

Will the 100g be too much??

There is no such thing as too much amarillo 8)

Look in the recipes thread for JS golden ale.

I tend to use 20g @ 15, 5 and dry hop but you could easily up that if you balance it with some crystal.

I just made that beer...

I used the coopers draught, a tin of wheat malt, and 15g of amarillo at 15 minutes and 15g at 5 minutes.

then i dry hopped after a week with 10g.... i just had a taste last night and its glorious

I would not past 60g unless you are a hop fiend......Dry hop is a must IMO.

Doc loves his Amarillo, so he'd know what he's talking about for "hoppy"...James L's looks the goods too.

Cheers

I am getting help with my addiction to amarillo. Its a multi step program so i dont see myself getting thru it too quickly, particularly with +250g of amarillo in the freezer at last count......

To start with i would suggest sticking to the schedule JamesL suggested altho i would still up the dry hopping to 15g. Leaves you with enough to make another batch!

Amarillo is a superb hop.

However I would agree with about 60g being the best place to start initially. One I recently made with about 50-60g was very hoppy indeed.

you're a superb hop....
so lame.

ahem.

i prefer cascade, amarillo always adds a bit of grass to the beer, which I dont much care for. perhaps its something I'm doing though. anyone else found this?

No, you're a towel!

I have found that it gets a bit grassy when you leave it in dry hop for more than 10days or so. Only time I've noticed it though.

IMO cascade is the grassy hop. Not as much as POR but still grassy, i prefer the dry hopping aroma of amarillo over cascade

I prefer cascade over amarillo for dry-hopping, but easily prefer amarillo for flavour.

I use the strainer in my kegs. Aside from that, I use an 'op bag in my fermenter. I'm happy to let pellets into primary, but not when I rack or keg.

hmm interesting. i made the same brew twice, except for one had cascade and one had amarillo.

coopers Pale kit
coopers brew enhancer #2 (amarillo version had 500 malt extract, 500 dextrose)
750g LDME
15g hops at 20 mins
15g hops at 5 mins

amarillo was much grassier.
but its not going to turn me off the hop, i've tasted too many that have worked.

Here's a pic of my 2nd AG.
20 litre batch.
3.9 kg Pale Ale Malt, Barret Burston
.25 kg Amber Malt, Bairds
.25 kg Wheat Malt, Barret Burston
Mashed at 65ºC.

13 gr Chinook 12% 60 min
13 gr Chinook 12% 30 min
17 gr Amarillo 8.9% 15 min
17 gr Amarillo 8.9% 2 min
17 gr Amarillo 8.9% dry hop
All pellets.

OG 1041, FG 1008
WLP001 1.5 litre starter.

Didn't like it much at first, but it's improved as the hop flavour has settled down and integrated.
