There's nothing holy about matrimony- or so all my married friends tell me.

aurelius121ad wrote:Thats good to know that hops are not 100% necessary. I was definitly planning on experimenting quite a bit once I get a first batch or 2 behind me. There is this spice available in china that i cant wait to try. I dont know how to say it in English, in Chinese it is Hua Jiao. it is similar to black pepper but it is more spicy and has a numbing effect. It may go really well in the beer process... and there's only one way to find out!
A possible source of info is a brewer with the moniker CJ, who's in Chiba, Japan - you might want to send him an email and see if he can give you some more info on possible sources of brewing material in China or Japan. He's on a number of brewboards, including aussiehomebrewer and brewboard.com and the northernbrewer forum...

Hope this helps,

Funny you should mention Dong Tu Thai Nee, as that was the former name of Hung Wei Lo! He met a genie who granted him one wish, and he asked for a miniture piano player, so that he could get rich showing him to people.

The genie assumed that Dong meant something different, and he was instantly transformed into Hung Wei Lo. Go figure.

Thanks for all your help. I really appreciate it. I think I may actually know CJ though. I know an Ozzie by the name of CJ who lives here in Beijing. If I recall correctly, the last time I saw him he mentioned somehting about homebrewing. The pieces all fit together, it very well could be the same guy. I will have to give him a call and see where he is getting his supplies.... if it is the same CJ.

I will also be looking into buying supplies from those companies... if they are willing to sell a small and modest amount! However, I am a bit concerend that if they were to sell to me that would have the ingredients for making Chinese style beer which is lacking in the delicous department. I will defintily be asking though!

Yup. It's called "gruit" for anyone wanting to research the matter further. I've been trying to track down some gruit recipes in order to make some experimental beers. To date, my attempts at making gruit haven't gone well... it tastes terrible and I haven't had the patience to keep experimenting. Finding some good quality reliable recipes would help.

Unfortunately, one of the reasons that hops became a more popular bittering agent than gruit is their natural preservative effect on the beer. Beer without hops doesn't last as long. But I suppose, if you come up with a good gruit mixture, the beer isn't going to last long anyway

Sounds like you need some of Doc S's mini fermenters to experiment in.

2 litre Port/Sherry flagons are great for tiny experiments.

I have a couple of 5 litre glass carboys for experimental stuff. Being glass, I can see everything going on which helps with experimental brews.

G'day mate.

I also live in Beijing, Wu Dao Kou to be exact.

I am also quite keen to get some brewing going. I was recently in Tianjin and on my way to the station I actually spotted a brewing shop. I missed the opportunity to visit the shop myself but would really like to find out what they stock, whether they will deliver/mail to Beijing and whether there is anything in Beijing alike. I also know a few shops that sell one of Australia's most loved beers; Coopers. A full flavoured, cloudy beer (Pale and Sparkling Ale) that has bucket loads of flavour.

Let me know if you are keen to look into this shop in Tianjin or if you would like to know where the stockists of Coopers are. I will be watching your brewing efforts in China quite closely too!

I have been living in Beijing for a few years now and I obviously know the wudaokou area. Since comming here I am familair with Coopers however I think you Ozzies are a bit biased, it isnt exactly one of my favorites. I am big on really hoppy beers (nothing beats an IPA). Although in comparison to the standard Chinese stuff Coopers is amazing. As far as imported beer I like the numbered Russian beer (Baltik I think)... it isnt the greatest beer on the planet but it is only 10 kuai for 500ml and they have a few varieties. There are 2 shops near the Lido hotel that both have a decent selection of imorted beers (and hard alcohols): Jenny Lous and some other import shop 20 yards away.

I am looking at brewing to have something to do on the weekends in the winter and see if I can actually do it here. I am sure I will be able to come up with some kind of alcoholic beverage... how drinkable it will be is going to be a different story.

And I would like any info at all you have about this illusive Tianjin brewers shop. Anything would be helpful, I have a friend from Tianjin who may or may not be able to go in and see what it is all about. Or maybe thats going to be the next motorcycle destination for me and my partner in crime with this homebrew undertaking.
