Australian Type bitter
Australian Type bitter
Anyone have a good recipe for an Australian type bitter?? Any easy type drinkin style. Wanting one for when mates come around. They have undeveloped pallets and not a fan of hoppy type beers hahahahaha. Extract preferbelly.
Ah, beer, my one weakness. My Achille's heel, if you will.
Re: Australian Type bitter
Try either the Coopers Brewmaster series Traditional Draught, or Australian Bitter.

Re: Australian Type bitter
Hop wise, PoR for most Aussie beers isn't it? I made a XXXX Gold clone on PoR for a mate with those tastes & he likes it more than the original ('sif that's hard
)
Thin it out with some dextrose & keep the IBUs pretty mild I reckon.
This is what I made for my mate...
4l boil, made upto 23l to make a mid
1500.00 gm Coopers Light Liquid Extract (5.3 EBC) Extract 50.00 % - Stir in at flameout
1000.00 gm Morgans Master Blend Lager Malt (2.4 EBC) Extract 16.67 % - 1/2 in for the boil, 1/2 in at flameout
250.00 gm Caramel/Crystal Malt - 80L (157.6 EBC) Grain 8.33 % - in boil
10.00 gm Pride of Ringwood [9.10 %] (60 min) Hops 9.9 IBU
10.00 gm Pride of Ringwood [9.10 %] (20 min) Hops 6.0 IBU
10.00 gm Pride of Ringwood [9.10 %] (10 min) Hops 3.6 IBU
250.00 gm Dextrose (0.0 EBC) Sugar 8.33 %
OG: 1.036
FG: 1.010
Alc/Vol: 3.38%
I've used S23 to make it a lager and in another instance US56/05 for an ale - both work (ferment the US56/05 cooler to keep it cleaner if you go ale)

Re: Australian Type bitter
Kevnlis - I know Bitter is cluster but unsure if Gold is the same brew watered down or not? I'm (almost) certian the Castlemaine kits suggest a dry hop of cluster for the bitter & PoR for the Gold, though I could be mistaken.
Timmsy - that recipie I posted was without a kit, straight extract. If you use the bitter tin just add the PoR to a bit of the malt & boil for 10min or so.
What volume are you fermenting & what Alc level are you aiming at? Cause a kit, plus a tin plus say 500gm dex will get you over 5% pretty easily in 23l

Re: Australian Type bitter
I would be aiming at full alcohol percentage say 4.5 to 5% and yep just standard batch volume

Re: Australian Type bitter
You are heading towards coopers pale ale with that combo, not a bad thing mind.
If you are after something easy drinking then (and i cant believe i am saying this) add some dex instead of all malt. If your mates taste is XXXX of the like then an all malt brew will be too heavy and too sweet for him. A cluster/POR combo worked well for me in the past with a coopers BE2 and the tin of goop of your choice.
Was tasting a mates HBs last week after golf, all hot and bothered despite kicking their arses. Mate served up a few ciders and a lager and a real ale. Despite my preference for AG these days and hoppy beast i was pleasantly surprised. His cider was better than the one i had made from apple juice and a $16 wyeast cider yeast and his lager (coopers lager, brew enhancer of some description and brewed at 23 odd degrees) was too damn easy to drink. I think its time i dug out some of my old kit beers and remind myself of what i used to brew!No chance of me becoming an AG snob it seems!
