Malt Shovel Two-Row Lager

Post by Daron1973 »

I just bought a can of this. Does anyone have any suggestions?

I want to make more than the 11.5 litres it suggests and the HBS fella suggested a mix of LDME, Maltodex and Dextrose... all of which i have, to make it go further. I also have some Saaz in the freezer

So, anyone got a recipe?

Cheers

Have a search for "lager" and you'll get plenty of ideas yourself. When you refer to LDME are you talking about Liquid Dark Malt Extract? You might be able to do a kit based oktoberfest with those ingredients, if you are. I'd grab some bittering hops (Perle, Northern Brewer, Hallertauer) to cut back on the excessive amount of Saaz you'd need to bitter this brew with.

I'd just put another can in if your after something simple, use both kit yeasts. I did this and it turned out pretty nice, didn't really need anything else. But thats what those kits are designed for
Is it beer'o'clock yet

LDME = Light Dry Malt Extract. I was thinking of 500g of that, and 250 dex and 250 Maltodex. and maybe top it to 18 litres...

No probs - if you have a hydrometer, you can add all the ingredients and top up the fermenter, with the clean hydrometer in the fermenter and stirring as you go, until you've added enough water to reach an acceptable starting gravity - around 1.045 or higher should do. That way, you get the most out of your ingredients and don't risk over diluting the kit and malt extract.

I used to make a pretty nice becks clone with the malt shovel :

malt shovel two row lager
light liquid malt extract 1.5 kg
hallertau hops 25g ( 20 mins)
saaz hops 15g ( 2 mins)
and saflager yeast x2
final volume 21 litres
