Measuring Hops

Post by G-money »

How are people measuring their hops? I have just been dividing a 100g pack by 4 to get 25g and in half to get 12.5 grams, I guess for 15g or 20g.

Do people accurately weigh their hops and what kind of scales do you use? Where can I get a cheap one that has increments of 1g?

I do exactly the same thing, and I've had pretty consistent results. The only scales I have is an old (20 years old) persinware scale my mum used to use for making cakes (weighs in 20g increments). I do plan on getting a set of drug scales eventually  You can pick up cheap 2nd hand scales that weigh in 1g increments on e-bay, it's better than paying big bucks for a new set

I use the electronic scales from Big W as well. IIRC I paid just over $20 for mine.

I use small plastic containers for each hop addition, and I've numbered them in the order they are added to the boil.

When I weigh them, I add till I'm almost up to correct weight, and then just add a pellet or two at a time till the correct weight just kicks over.

I weigh everything out the day before brew day, and keep them in an airtight container in the fridge until needed.

I picked up a shadow scale that measures to 1000g in .01g increments. It is brilliant for hops and water salts and I do not regret the $60 I paid for it! Worth every dollar!

I used to use that method until I forked out about $20-$25 on some digital scales that measure to 500g in 0.1g increments. I never had any problems with using the method of just dividing them up, but for accuracy and to make sure that you haven't been ripped off by the supplier it's not much to get some scales.

No hop supplier would be stupid enough to try to rip you off. Homebrewers gossip like a bunch of old nannas!

i have set of digital scales from Jaycar, up to 1000g in 0.5g increments. probably not good enough for detailed mineral additions etc if i was to bother going that far, but more than adequate for hops.

I have a set of scales that got up to 2kg in 1g increments, but for the finer ammounts, i have scales that go to four decimal places for when i want to add mg at a time...

Analogue scales to 5 Kilos with resolution of 2 grams for 15 bucks at Chickenfeed Tassie. No problems with these scales. Good value.

Digital, up to 5kg in 0.1g intervals. Harris Scarf (or Allens if you are in NSW) for $18. Never buy anything from there unless it is '50% off,' otherwise you are paying more than rrp.

And as for ripping people off, my koji supplier sent me a 50g lot of koji that weighed 48g still in packaging. I mentioned Office of Fair Trading and got sent a 14g bag free. Glad I had my scales!
