2 kit brews

Post by 2fast »

What do you guys think of 2 hopped kits in one brew?? and adding some hops.
I want to try 2 coopers lager cans, and 5g saaz boil for 15min then 5g at flame out and rest for 5min.

Too much hops??

Or and I better off using 1 can coopers and one can unhopped.

Cheers

2 cans works fine, particularly for less bitter kits such as the lager.

Go for it!

Before you add any extra hop bitterness find out what the bitterness of your kits are. They are on the coopers website, for a 23L batch divide by 23 and then multiply by 1.25.

I did a twocan a while ago which ended up pretty bitter at about 60IBU. Without enough malt to balance it I wouldn't do it again.

If you decide to go with 1 kit and 1 unhopped I would definitely add some extra hop bitterness to balance it.

The classic toucan is a stout plus a dark ale. Comes out really well. Not sure what you'd get out of the two lagers... might be worth considering adding 1kg LDME, say 150g light crystal and 150g medium crystal plus some English flavour/aroma hops to make a strong ale, which might be a bit more balanced.

Ok thanks I going to use:
1 cooper larger kit 1.7kg
1 blackrock LME 1.5kg
1 Tablespoon NZ green bullet hop pellets boil 1hr(alpha14.3)
1 Heaped Tablespoon Czech Saaz hop pellets at last 15min(Alpha2.5)
1 Heaped Tablespoon Czech saaz hop pellets dry hop in fermenter.
20L Water

I'm building a hot box as It is winter here in NZ ,wife won't let me brew inside.
Will have to test it out will keep brew at 20'C

No such thing as 'too much hops'!

Sounds good indeed. You may find the green bullet makes it a bit too bitter... however, that's largely a matter of personal taste.

I reckon it's worth using the cold to your advantage. If you dump the kit yeast, sub in a proper saflager s23, and brew outside you should make a ripper cold-conditioned lager. As the warmer months return, you can move back to brewing ales.

Larch
Good Idea about the lager brewing with the cool temps.
Got hot box up and running, at least I have some control over the temps for once, I'm really happy with how it turned out.

Will post some pics when I get a dig camera.

Made brew up , checked it out today airlock was nearly dry, bubbling hard out.

Sweet

A colleague at work once made a two can "Cascade Golden Harvest Lager" which turned out a very good drop.

Have not tried it myself, but plan to in the future.

Cheers!
