Cloudy beer...!!

Post by Beer »

On my first homebrew. Have followed everything to the letter. Drawn off a sample today (day 7) but the beer is still hazey even though I have added finnings to the wort 2 days ago. Should I leave for another 24 hrs or should it settle in the bottle.

The starter kit came with a corona style beer with it and also a bag of grains which I sat in almost boiling water for 15 mins and strained in to the fermenter. Could this be causing the cloudy beer.

It seems that this type of beer creates a bit of an atmos on this forum, this is my first time and I'm just after some advice not a lecture on my choice of beer.

Hope someone can help.

Thanks

Yeah the boiling water would have extracted tanins and proteins which will cause haze. Don't worry, I am sure it will be drunk by the time you notice any flavour impact.

It could also be suspended yeast. What temp is the beer at? What sort of yeast did you use?

Thanks for the quick reply. The fermenter was at around 22-24 for the first 3 days and has steadied at about 18. The yeast was what came with the tin of concentrate. Not overly sure of the specific type.

Not sure if leaving it in the fermenter could risk it going off. ?? Or if the cloudyness will alter the taste ?

Just bottle it and leave it for a few weeks. Then you can have a go and see how you did. Should be fine!

If you put your bottles in the fridge for a few weeks before drinking you'll settle out a bit more of the yeast.

7 days is not long and the yeast will still be suspended in the beer. You can leave it for another 7 days and bottle it then and will reduce the haze quite significantly. The near boiling water used with the grains won't help, but won't have made enough haze for the beer to gain a bad haze. (I'm guessing there wasn't more than 200gms of grain). Don't worry about styles of beer to much at this early stage and make what you want. The main things you can learn from this forum are consistency, patience and quality get out what is put in.

Thanks everybody for the input. So many things to think about. I get the impression that it's pretty difficult to brew lager. But it's a learning curve.
Maybe I will leave this brew for another day or so and give it a good time in the bottle. Maybe put a dozen in the fridge for 4 weeks see how they go.

What ever happens I will enjoy my first brew and really look forward to trying out some different types of beer along the way.

Really interested in other peoples receipies as well. Like the idea of a pale ale. I live just round the corner from Little Creatures, Fremantle and like alot of their beers. Keep the suggestions comng,

Thanks again.
