Stiring brew half way through

Post by Sweeney Tod »

Hi all,

I have currently got on a brew consisting of two cans of Coopers lager & 750grms of honey. I had a sachet of the Thomas Coopers yeast that came with the pilsner that I’m using instead of the normal coopers yeast, the brew started with an OG of 1060.

The brew has been going along quite nicely at around 12-14 deg c for 8 days but has started to slow over the last couple of days, tonight I went out to check the SG (1040) and had to try to clear some of the foam on top to get a clear reading when I put the lid back on I found that I started to bubble it’s head off so I decided to give it a bit of a stir to see if this would help to get the SG down a bit lower.

My question is, is this normal for the gases to start going more rapidly if we agitate the brew half way through?

And does anyone now what sort of FG I should be looking for seeing it started so high to begin with?

Cheers

The CO2 generated during the fermentation process will mostly bubble out thru the airlock but it is partially soluble in wort/beer. So when you stirred it up you knocked some of the dissolved CO2 out of solution.

Its the same principal of turning fizzy coke into flat coke but stirring it rapidly with a spoon for a few minutes.

As for the FG, I'd be looking at 1.016/18 as a guide

I have no idea what that yeast is, lets assume its a true lager strain then 8 days isn't all that long. I let my lagers go for up to 4 weeks in primary.

A mate of mine used to make a two-can with coopers lager. Called it BAF. Bitter as ...... With 2 tins you are looking at an IBU close to 50 which for him was a bit much. He has since tasted my 2IPA which was ~75 IBU and doesn't find his BAF that bitter anymore

Hi Sweeney,
I did a toucan recently,
2 cans lager
1 can of TC's liquid amber malt extract.

It took 3 weeks to finish...stuck at 1022 for a few days, just over a week in.

I gently swirled and gave it a heat bump up to 22C for a few hours. A couple of days of that and it eventually finished at 1014.

I rested it for a week and bottled at 4 weeks. I used S-05. yeast.

Nice drop.

Hope this helps

Cheers

Hi guys,

Thanks for your input, DrSmurto that make sense about the dissolved gases and escaping once stirred.

I reckon I'll leave it go now for a another week before checking the SG again and see what its at then, besides I need to get another new Hydrometer as I am finding these to be a bit fragile lately, 2 in 2 months.

Thanks again, very helpful.

Cheers
