Good honey types and brands for brewing?
Good honey types and brands for brewing?
Yellowbox is the big one that is recommended by near everyone, but what are some other types that do well? And what are some blended brands that are good for brewing with?
Re: Good honey types and brands for brewing?
Capilano brand is good - that's the one that is used in Beez Neez.
As for varieties, clover honey is good for brewing. Just steer clear of the stronger tasting honeys.
Cheers,
Tim

I use orange blossom in my wheat beers and they turn out awesome!
Yellowbox too gives good results. Wouldn't use leatherwood imo

I have used yellowbox and the home brand honey, IMO the home brand honey was nicer but i dont know what type it is. It comes out sweet and after the beer has ages for a few months the sweetness goes and leaves a nice honey after taste. I have done about 5 batches using this honey + its a the cheapest at the store
i think $4.30 for 500gram which is perfect for a brew.

I've read a few people using it in dark ales.chadjaja wrote: Wouldn't use leatherwood imo

I reckon I'll still give it a go.

Redoak uses leatherwood in their honey ale. I'm yet to taste it but a fellow brewer I know reckons it's sensational.
Re: Good honey types and brands for brewing?
I used Leatherwood in one of my Honey Porters and definately DID NOT like what it tasted like. From now on it's Yellow Box in my Porter or a clover honey in a blonde.

Re: Good honey types and brands for brewing?
I have heard that salvation jane is meant to be a good honey for brewing, though i have not used it yet. I believe it is a clover based, but am unsure if you can get it from the supermarket. The only honey i have used is yellow box and i have no complaints, very tasty in the red that i did. Check out caramel flavours on the 2nd pg of making beer.

I use Leatherwood for porters and dark ales and the Capilano for anything else!
Quite like the flavour the Leatherwood gives to the darker brews.
