I've done a batch of this using BB Pale Malt for the base malt and sadly it's not all that good. FWIW, I'd recommend those of you who buy bulk bags of BB Pale to grab 2kg of Marris Otter when you are thinking of doing an all grain version of this. Unfortunately, the BB pale makes it more pale than desireable. It's drinkable but lacks the depth and complexity that the floor malted Marris Otter malt provides.
Cheers,
TL

I'll be brewing some more kegs of this stuff once the garage warms up and I can't make any more lagers!

I've just started drinking a batch of this, and I'm totally stoked with the complexity of the malt flavours, and the hop flavour and aroma. It's turned into a stunning beer, one I'd rate as my best to date.
My brew is not an exact copy of TL's excellent recipe, as I modified it to suit my stock of malts and hops. Anyway, here's my BeerSmith recipe. Definitely on the to do again list before long.

Hi Warra
Looks a wonderfully complex recipe! How do you think it lines up alongside SNPA? Were you in fact trying to clone SNPA? Was the last addition of Cascade a dry hop addition or just at flame-out? Looks excellent anyway.
Cheers

Thanks Neil.
I can't say how it compares to the real SNPA, as I've never had the pleasure of consuming one of those. I wasn't trying to clone anything in particular. TL's SNPA recipe was the first AG I brewed, and I wanted another go at it, but had to modify it to brew with what I had in stock.
All I can say is that it is a lot more complex than LCPA, JSAA, JSGA, or our local brew Wicked Elf PA.
The last addition of Cascade was at flameout. I didn't dry hop this one at all, but it still has a very recognisable Cascade aroma and flavour.

Looks good! I have been building up an amber ale recipe, based on my SNPA recipe - it has a very similar ingredient profile - I prefer around 250-300g of amber malt to give it a deeper mahogany like colour profile. And since I've got a 25kg sack of Bairds Amber malt, I think it's gonna last a lifetime!!
If you replaced the US-05 with some San Francisco Lager yeast and fermented it at room temps, you'd have a very nice Steam Beer too!
Cheers,
TL

I haven't had the pleasure of trying the SNPA as yet either so I know what you mean. But I like the look of this and will give it a whirl with what I have about here hop and grain wise. I did a FWH (15g Cascade) with my first AG - an APA - and I loved the effect. I know a lot of people slag it off but I've also read others who compliment it as a way of adding a smoothness to the base bitterness as well as adding some aroma. All subtle tweaks I guess. TL's suggestion of trying this with Wyeast San Francisco lager yeast also sounds appealling!

G'day all,
It was yours truly's birthday yesterday so after I did the painting to top up the brownie points, it was down to the local beer shop and guess what? I managed to score a case of SNPA! At $133 a pop it's not exactly cheap but I have a slab to work through over the next few weeks/months and I should be able to sort out the flavours a bit better for the recipe!
Oh, and I managed to pick up some other beers as well - TT Landlord, Aventinus, Schofferhoffer, Erdinger Pikantus and I can't remember the others. I may post a pick of the slab and mixed batch (palate calibration session #2!!) if you're into beer p0rn!!
Cheers,
TL

Hey TL,
I made your SNPA clone for my first all grain 2 weeks ago. I am drinking it right now and it has turned out great. Its definately on the bitter side, but a damn tasty beer. I guess time in the keg will settle it down. Not sure if it will last long though. Im really enjoying it and will be making it again very soon. Thanks.
Cheers, Jim

as a damn yank, all I can say is cheers brothers. This is one of my fav. beers. A nice little hop bomb for a pale.(west coast pale) one day I may try to brew some, but since I buy it all the time I spend most of my brew time making beers that I cant get here in the U.S.A. funny how that works.

time to go brew some more British Ales.

Just got back from two weeks in Canada and the US, yesterday. I drank heaps of the West Coast Pale whilst in Ottawa - damn that's a great, monstrous, hop laden beer!
I'll post a separate article on the places visited and many beers had...after I get rid of the jetlag!!
Cheers,
TL

I hope some one told you to try the 'Hazed and Infused' or the 'Mojo IPA' from Boulder Beer Co. or something from Left Hand Brewing. The Hazed and Infused is the best hop bomb I have ever had. Will be cool to hear what all you got to try.
