I had a stubbie of monteiths black last night and i was disappointed,i expected a malty hit but it was pretty light and i couldn't taste a slight hint of any roast.
Little creatures pale ale is very tasty, but only because of the hops, the underlying beer would probably be quite normal without the cascade hit.
I tried rooftop red a few months ago,so can't really say if it was great or normal,it certainally wasn't outstanding or i would have remembered it.But that's for my taste buds. :)

LCPA struggling to beat your worst K&K

Each to their own Tarlox and pacman but I would expect that over 80% (minimum) of brewers may disagree.

Do you guys put hops in your brews :? :o

LCPA was the beer that made me realise that Hops was the way to go.

Next thing you will be telling me you do not like James Squire Golden Ale  due to the overpowering Amarillo

Fair Dinkum I am sitting here agasp that you guys don't like it. Only my Tooheys swilling mate thought it a "BIT STRONG"......and he drinks nothing but commercial shite

Hi Boonie,

Jury still out for me re LCPA. Only had 2 stubbies, presumably from different batches, as they were purchased months apart, & from different outlets.

Can only presume that I got a couple of duds in light of the plethora of favourable reports on this product.

Hope the third sample is as good as all the rave reviews. Have not compared LCPA to my HBs.

But I now will. On my experience to date with LCPA, I would have given up HB'ing if my efforts were no better than my 2 samples of LCPA.

Like I said, the jury is still out. Going to buy sample # 3 very very soon.

I'm with Boonie here. LCPA is a bloody good beer.

It is pretty strongly hopped, and I agree the first one can be almost overpowering, but the next few are great. Just great.

Each to his own of course, but to say it is a "bad" beer is one I reckon the majority would disagree with.

We are all entitled to our own opinions. I was just giving "MY" opinion of LCPA based on the bottle I tried recently. Sure, I will try it again, but maybe it's just not a beer for me.

The TCB American Ale wetpak, which I brewed recently is "in my opinion" a better beer than the LCPA I tried, (and yes it had hops in it ).

Boonie, I don't care whether you or 80% of people on this forum love this beer. Maybe we have different tastes. So for now I will not be jumping on the LCPA band wagon just because you are AGASP with my observations.

Regards

Dave

I don't recall saying it was a "bad" beer?? I think "ordinary" was the word.

Maybe that's why I started my post with "Each to their own"

I don't remember asking you to jump onto the bandwagon

Cheers Tarlox, love your passion

Tried my 3rd LCPA tonight.

For the record, on a judging scale of 100, the 1st & 2nd samples were not scored. Both samples were faulty. Simple as that.

The 3rd? Yeah, very, very nice. Just a little short of being a great beer.
Good malty undertones, with bitterness just a trifle understated. Rated it as a 90/100 sample.

Would happily drink this on a semi regular basis (semi regular because I save my regular drinking for my HBs, or the brews I put down at my local micro brewery).

Jury is still out, but the case for LCPA is suddenly looking more promising.
Consistency, or the lack of it, will determine whether or not LCPA features in my "bought beers" stocks.

I agree with some inconsistencies in beers.

I had a JS Golden Ale the other night......and it was different to the one I had last night. :?

Dunno if it is the temp, storing conditions or what??

I think it can be temp as I have had one of my HB's (Brewferm Triple) at a different temp (Euro style warm  ) and the taste was completely different.

Cheers

I think transport would often be the cause Boonie.

You often see alcoholic beverages being transported on open vehicles. At least, you do up here in Bananaland. But even if the vehicle is covered, the temps can become alarmingly high.

When the order arrives at the retail outlet, it is often left out in the sun for who knows how long.

Don't think this type of handling does anything for the quality encountered by the end user.

I find Coopers ales fairly inconsistent, but I don't mind.

Tried my 4th LCPA just now. Bought at the same time as my 3rd, taste tested above.

Inconsistency rules with this beer. In particular, there was something wrong with the aftertaste with # 4. Also, it did not taste as malty or as hoppy as # 3.

Rating for # 4? A somewhat generous 65/100. The next one of these I try will be purchased by someone else!

I'd agree on the inconsistencies. I really do like a good LCPA - and it was my favourite commercial drop - but lately it has let me down. I find the same with the LC Pilsner too - I had two lovely drops of it out last week at the start of the night. Did the same the other day and found them to be entirely unremarkable...

The LCPA got me into drinking much more malty/hoppy beers - in particular I drank a truckload of Mac's Sassy Red when back in NZ over summer. Enjoyed it thoroughly. But - I agree, I find lately it is becoming a bit of a risk. I dont know whether to blame the pubs/bars, or quite what. I certainly love, and have never had issues with it on tap... I now am tending towards JS Golden Ale as a firm bet.

Agree on coopers too - I now drink coopers on tap really - I dont get it in the bottle, preferring my own ales that I make instead. I will say though, I had a DAB (Dortmund lager) last night, which I am partial to - I then had a coopers sparkling ale after and was blown away by the banana whiff... halfway though my pallete came right . I never have quite experienced the full fruityness of sparkling ale until last night... nothing to do with it being Mardis Gras night, I'm sure!

on the point of coops pa - was won back the other day after getting really bored with, when i had one on tap at local. so much better than bottled, ya kno if it's tipped even a little ya get the yeast ruining that light hops taste.

so yeah - CPA on tap all the way - unless it's the bottom of their keg!

I swear Cooper's must train bar managers in the art of bullsh*t when it comes to excuses on not putting on a new keg...

About 3-4 bars I have been to, that serve me a PA that is so thick you could stand a spoon in it have all said the precise damn sentence "You don't like it? Real Cooper's fans live for this part!" I simply don't understand why a "real Coopers fan" would prefer trub compared to the good stuff... I firmly believe it is because bars probably do lose out on about 3-4 litres of 'beer' compared to other brands. Still.. they charge more for Coopers, and they probably get more people staying/drinking by serving Coopers than by just offering the standard CUB/LN Options.

I've noticed recently that the Coopers PA on tap at my local has given me a bit of an upset tummy. I'll not overdoing the detail. In a way that an equal number of schooners of Old has not.

Cheers,
Greg
