craig82 wrote:how about this though. have you ever tasted a beer... thought it was horrible and then on a really hot day drank it because thats all there was? how much more did you appreciate it?
i agree craig, on a 40-degree day (such as today), i'd drink a west end if it was handed to me. in fact, the only time i've ever enjoyed a west end draught has been on a stinking hot day.

Craig,

I agree. For me the worst beer is Emu Export or 'Red Can' or 'Wife Basher' - depending on where you are from. Though VB is pretty bad.

Export put me off beer for many years - growing up it was the only thing available. So I had to drink Jacks.

But after mowing the lawns in 45 degree heat, 2 Exports are awesome - knocks me straight out

If I'm drinking spirits it's a Jamesons and dry, soda or cola.

Never been a big spirits drinker, is it just me or does it seem to bring out angry little rednecks in those who are normally pretty placid people?
Seriously, not having a go, I've seen some people do strange things on spirits who normally handle beer really well.

Yeah, I think Bundy Rum in particular has a higher level of the type of alcohol that makes you angry. I guess they don't call it Angry Juice for nothing.

i agree 100%. i've seen surley on scotch. it's a dangerous proposition. certain establishements still have things to repair as a result.

i've seen the same thing happen... some people who are normally happy easy-going drunks become angry or depressed drunks on spirits.

Yep, I've known some pubs to stop serving spirits of an evening because they have had too much trouble with people earlier in the day...

Chatting with an ex publican (western Qld) today, and the subject of beer temps cropped up, as it does.

Asked what was the ideal serving temp for XXXX. Can vary, he said, but wouldn't go into specifics. But at any establishment he ran, he had the cellar temp at 0 degC to 1 degC, with beers being poured direct from the coldroom kegs. Didn't like temprites, and only used them in dire emergency situations.

Was critical of establishments that ran long lines from temp controlled coldrooms through large room temp areas before getting to the taps. They would be well advised to use temprites IHO.

So now we know how XXXX gets away with their sub standard brews. Serve it so damn cold that the dreaded POR is subdued.

Correction.

According to Wikipedia, the only hops used in XXXX is Cluster (also known as Golden Cluster).

My apologies to fans of POR.

Just saw this topic and thought I'd throw in my two cents worth.

I have had a slab of Cascade Light sitting around since early January. I bought it for a party thinking people might want it if they were driving. They drank my (then kit) homebrew and got taxis in preference. I can't bring myself to drink any of it.

The wife won't drink it.

Recent house visitors have smiled and asked for water in preference.

I left it outside on rubbish night with a note thanking the garbos. They left it untouched and haven't emptied my bins ever since.

LMAO... the garbos actually left it?

 I actually prefer the Cascade Light to Hahn Light
when I have to drive (Very rare)

But it is always on tap and tastes a little better IMO

Cheers

Boonie

PS Then again, what light is "Really" great....

Cascade is by the far the best commercial light beer out, not that I drink it that often
