Just got back from an overnight pub run to the George IV Inn in Picton NSW. They brew their own beer - a lager and a bock (and a light beer allegedly), and I've gotta say they are two of the nicest Australian beers I've had. Even picked up some takeaways (although at the moment I feel as much like a beer as I do a tuna milkshake).

Yeah, so if you are ever in the area or feel like doing an away trip, I'd recommend it. With the bock being as nice and drinkable as it is and the fact that it is 6.4%, you're best off not making it a day trip.

The best beer i have tasted is my own.
The beer i usually drink when i am out is Toohey's Black Ale.
I am partial to vertually any free beer and from memory have never knocked one back.
Some of my favourite beers are Cascade Premium and Boags premium, both from Tasmania.
I hate the fact, that people think Crown Lager is a premium beer.
I now understand the power of advertising!

I like to buy a couple Grolsch if I can and save the bottles, don't mind the beer either,although at a restraunt or Pub... Boags Premium has to be my favourite bought beer.
I guess home brew never quiet tastes like anything else......just better.

I just got back from New Zealand, boutique breweries are big over there! So lots of little pubs etc have their own brews. However on a bigger scale, if you get the chance check out some of the Monteith's or Mac's brews, all those I tried where great. I especially like MOnteith's Celtic Red, a great drop. I am lead to believe as well that Woolworth Liquors stores stock the Monteiths as well!

I'm home in the US now and all I can say is holy crap. I went to the boutique beer store where there are well over 500 choices. I got a gift certificate for a bar that has 25 beers on tap and another 200 in bottle. It really opens your eyes as to how many different kinds of beer are out there. I've had examples of styles that you cant even find in Australia, Kolsch, barleywine, altbier, spiced winter ales, roggenbier. I'm not sure what my favorite beer is anymore...

Love Pilsner Urquell only discovered it a couple weeks ago pretty good valve too if you live near a dan muphy. JS amber ale has agreat flavour and for those special nights Carls. Elephant two of those and I'm away.

For anyone living in melbourne check out 3 Degrees at the new QV complex in swantson St for 10 bucks you can sample 8 Aussie beers including redback, beez neez (YUK) dog bottler, alpha ale, bohem pilsner and there own microbrew They even do free tours and tasting on saturdays.

The Belgium Beer Cafe on St Klida Rd also has a great list had a Belle Vue lambic very interesting quite liked it

I agree with the YUK about Beez Neez. One of the more ordinary beers I've tasted. In fact, it's terrible.

I seem to go through phases of favourite beers. At the moment it is Bohemien Pilzner, bloody good drop that. I am also quite partial Boags Draught on tap when I am in Tassie. However the beer I always end up going back to is Coopers Sparkling.

For a cheap (read value for money) beer Melbourne Bitter is pretty good!

I tend to usually go for any premium beer that's cheap by the carton to sample and I haven't tried too great a range of International beers coz I find it hard to find em. I reckon that the Coopers range boasts some of the best beers I've tasted (sparkling and dark ales, yum) however if I go for one of the more generic beers, from lack of funds or if I know someone else is going to sponge a fair few stubbies, I don't mind Carlton Draught.

Just on a quick note, I reckon that Hotels that brew their own range of boutique beers and serve em on tap can be a good place to find some interesting nuggets of gold. If anyone is ever in Sydney I'd recommend the "Lord Nelson Brewery Hotel" in The Rocks. I went there the other day for a quick beer, we were having a Rocks pub crawl, and found I couldn't leave the joint. They had a pretty impressive range of yummy beers in a number of styles.

Also If you're ever in Newcastle (NSW, Australia), that's my neck of the woods, "The Brewery" on the harbour serves Bluetongue Lager on tap. Now, I'm not overly fond of the standard Bluetongue Lager (I find it a bit watery), but the Bluetongue Seasonal brews they serve are well worthwhile trying.

Have just joined,so I thought Id throw my my two bobs worth in.Tooheys old is a favorite when out,and if desperate,maybe a carlton draught.Hate to say it,but most mainstream commercial beer tastes like colored water,apart from Coopers and James Squire.Here is a true story,my ex missus used to work at CUB in Melbourne in the brewers section.She noticed that the same ingrediants went into two diffent vats.When she asked the head brewer what thedifference was between Crown Lager and Fosters Lager,his answer was "The label" Wedid a taste test blindfolded and couldnt pick the difference

It's interesting you say that about Foster's/Crown Lager.

I've heard many similar stories, some of the from people who also work at CUB.

The stories I've heard usually involve Crown being lagered for longer or that there's not enough demand for Foster's to brew a batch of it, so they just pull it out of the Crown Lager line.

The weight of evidence is against them trying to argue otherwise, I'd reckon.

I have been told that the only differences between Fosters and Crownies is that crownies are export quality (what is in the tins of fosters you buy overseas). Local fosters is the crap that did not pass the quality control.

We have the same issue with Moosehead here in Canada. The export is supposed to be cats, the Domestic is shite

I have had the Fosters here in Canada but it is made here in Canada so ofcourse it is different than your stuff. I do find that it tastes like any Domestic Canadian Beer from the Big Boys so that doesn't really bode it well.

A friend just gave me a new beer called B(E) to try. I wasn't too into it at first but it's actually damn good. More like a cocktail but it has a little zing to it since they added caffeine, guarana and ginseng. Kept me going late that night.
