Is XXXX really that bad? I've had one or two in my time, and while it certainly ain't a super beer, I'd probably choose it over a VB any time (although that's not saying much!).

XXXX bitter is definitely hangover material and I think XXXX gold tastes like cereal, but in the grand scheme of things, I don't think it's too bad. Light years ahead of carlton cold.
On a side note, I read in the description of XXXX bitter from the Brisbane beer festival that they use cane sugar as part of the fermentables. Anyone know if this is right?

I don't understand what you blokes are on about - beer is like women. There are no 'bad ones', it's just that some are better than others.
Anyway, a beer not yet mentioned which I reckon is the second worst thing I EVER put into my mouth was Schlits (sp?) - this sewage-thinner is/was from (I think) the West coast of the USA.
...................... and to save you asking, I'm saying "seond worst" in case I've forgotten somthing.

aaaahh, good old Schlitz. If the bull on the label didnt tip you off that it was going to be bad...
It's actually a "malt Liquor" made in Milwaukee, WIsconsin. Malt liquor is essentially really bad high gravity beer and is designated differently because of some law limiting the amount of alcohol that can be in something while still labelling it as beer.
Malt liquor is the really chep way of getting drunk in the US. Its about $1.50-$2.00 for a 40 oz (1.2L) bottle and ranges from 6-9% ABV. At university my buddies and I tried all of the varieties that we could find. Some were ok but Schlitz was by far the worst, inducing one of my friends to vomit after about 4 sips of it.
That's a good nominee, unfortunately you cant find it here in Australia.

Hey Daring,
The Swan in the black can was Swan Premium (the name was some bastards idea of a joke) luckily they wised up and stopped making it years ago. I remember about 18 yrs ago when I was in Canberra for a while hunting for WA beer, i was home sick and couldn't stomach VB, the Premium was all i could find, no Emu Bitter or anything, so i drank anything else. God it was a truly awful drop.
Mind you for imported beer Nastro Azzuri is pretty bad, should be called Nasty Azzuri!!!

Coors light isnt bad, just no flavor. You can at least drink it, it has no flavors to offend you with.
Old Milwaukee, Milwaukee's Best (THE BEAST!!!) both regular and ice, Pabst blue ribbon, Schaeffer are all pretty rough.
Unfortunately, most of the people in Australia will never have heard of these beauties. I think what we can confirm is that the US makes lots of bad commercial beers (hangs head in shame).
On a counterpoint, there are TONS of microbreweries that make huge varities of really good beers and the size of the country means that you can get lots of varities in most places.

Just SOME are better than OTHERS!!
Some where, some how??? some poor fool reckons he/she likes such brews as : Carlton cold, crownies, corona, geelong ale, etc etc!

Tasman Bitter is actually Boags XXX ale repackaged for Coles Myer. It's not too bad for under $30 a slab. It certainly beats VB anyway. (but then most beer does)

Fellas,
Good to see that u guys are bagging some pretty horrid brews, but I can't believe that none of you have taken the time to chuck some shit at Fosters!!
Bloody Hell, I used to swig a few mouth fulls of the crap from my old man after he had finished a hard days shearing. I thought I was the ant's undies, but what the hell did I know - I was only ten.
My old man is now a diabetic and doesn't touch beer anymore. I blame this entire situation on Fosters. Thank God I came to my senses and started to brew my own beer.
So as you can probably guess, my vote goes to Fosters - send it all to the Poms, I say. They seem to like it.

Jezza, aparently the 'Fosters' available in Australia IS NOT the same as the well liked 'Fosters' sold overseas. Leading up to the Sydney Olympics to OS stuff was being imported.

Thought there had to be a reason why Fosters was so very popular overseas. Still, doesn't detract from the fact that the Fosters over here is pretty ordinary. My vote stands firm.

Its popular overseas cause everyone wants to be either a Canadian (Moosehead) or an Aussie (Fosters) It makes them feel exotic. It is a bit of a shame mind you, the pommies brewed a good glass in their time. They to have fallen on crap conglomerate breweries.

I tasted a beer today that would come close to the worst I've ever tasted: CUB's new low-carb beer, Pure Blonde.
It tasted just like a bad light beer (think Foster's Light Ice). Yum. NOT!
(For you non-Aussies, CUB is Carlton and United Beverages, Foster's Australian arm, and brewer of such gems as VB (Victoria Bitter), Crown Lager and Carlton Cold.)

I have no interest in every trying a low carb beer it just sounds bad, a diet beer. "Tastes Great, Less filling" Right
Have yourself a glass of Guiness and get the taste out of your mouth. Loaf of bread in every bottle you know. Hence the term "Barley Sandwiches" I guess

I agree with Matty here. I grew up with Amstel (brewed under licence in South Africa) and it's a damn good drop when compared with the piss that passes for beer over here. Over there we had local shit called Castle Ale and Lion Lager as well as locally-brewed American wee-wee called Carling Black Label, which are all in the same class as VB, if that's possible. And even though they don't sell Foster's in Australia anymore (do they?), it should be on the worst beers list. The first time I drank it I threw up after one can - and that was solely due to the taste. Australia has a well-deserved monopoly on bad beer. For anyone out there who is adventurous, and especially for those of you who live in Melbourne, take a trip to Mirboo North in Gippsalnd and visit the Grand Ridge Brewery. It's situated in an old butter factory and you can sit in the pub, which overlooks the brewery, and enjoy the best beer in Australia. The bar snacks are various types of barley, roasted to varying degrees, that go into the beer. I've been there twice in the past few years and it's worth the trip (the Grand Ridge Road through the Strzelecki Range has spectacular scenery). When I was last there, about three years ago, the master brewer gave me a personal tour (with tastings along the way). He had only been there for about a year - he was a keen home brewer from Morwell who applied for a job there through Centrelink. There's hope for us all.

Fosters is definitely still sold here. It's not that popular (with good reason) but it's still available.
As far as Grand Ridge goes... their beers are superb. They brew two high alcohol beers moonshine at 8% and supershine at 11% (I think) The supershine is almost liqueur like. It's so thick. One is certainly enough.
