Squirt, re the Millennium Ale chiller, this is all dependent on being able to get the contraption from Geoff. He's at least a 3-hour round-trip from me, not allowing for a few beers before making the return journey :-)

Re using tap water, I was going to take someone's suggestion of running the water into the washing machine. But the missus wants to get a water tank, so that no doubt will happen and I'll be able to recirculate into that.

Doc, what sort of pump do you use to recirculate the water?

Thanks for the other info, chaps.

Oliver

I think its a Davey pump? Not sure, i bought it at the same time as i bought the 2nd rainwater tank.

It connects the tanks to the rest of the property.

Thanks Doc. So it's a heavy-duty number. That gives me something to go on.

I already have a a 5,000L underground water tank which is connected to two of my outside taps. :P

Unfortunately I'm several months and several hundred dollars away from going all grain

My first all grain attempt.

Weyermann Munich Dunkel. 16L stovetop BIAB in 19L pot. 8)

No chill to save water as I don't have a tank.

Cheers

I use a 40 litre aluminium stock pot for my kettle. I regularly boil 32 litres in mine, and end up with about 25 litres into the fermenter.
I reckon at a pinch I could probably boil 35 litres, but you'd have to watch it like a hawk when it's getting close to the boil. However, turning down the heat as soon as you reach the boil, and using a spray bottle with cold water to spray the froth on top of the boil will all help to prevent boil overs.

I'll be brewing a Mild in the next few days. The test tube of WY1968 I'd saved in the fridge since Jan this year has fired in a ½ litre, and I built it up with a further 3 litres yesterday, and its humming along.

I use 2/3 LDME and 1/3 Coopers Dextrose for my starters to a gravity of around 1.040. Why that mix? Well, to my understanding, LDME wort is mashed high, and is basically designed to be used along with the proverbial kilo of sugar to give a proper balance of fermentables. LDME on its own is not as fermentable as our average AG wort, so by using this mix, I more closely approach the type of wort the yeast will have to work in for the full batch.

One question which has always confused me. That 3 ltr starter or whatever size it is you make, do you pitch ALL of the starter into your brew? or pour off liquid and just pitch slurry?

Sorry for my ignorance, but I have never found the definiative answer.

It's up to you.
However, if I spend 5 to 6 hours toil to brew an AG beer, I certainly don't want it diluted with a few litres of dodgy LDME and Dextrose beer. Hence I chill my starter brew, and pitch only the slurry.
Others' methods may differ, but it's what I do.

Anything over a 1l starter I chill and pitch the slurry only.

Also I can do 37l boils in my 40l urn but you have to be careful.

Just about to mash in a Dortmund Export recipe from Brewing Classic Styles.

I hope it turns out a bit better than the Dunkel I brewed last month.

The recipe in BCS is called Expat Export. I think I will re-name it Old Testament Export. I'm not sure what the 24Hr rainfall record for October is but we must be getting close.

PS: I can't seem to find my ark

Yeah, you're better at singing your way out of prisons than building boats.

I am currently brewing my first ever All-Grain effort. BIAB style.

3.467kg Pilsner (73.86%)
1.067kg Pilsner Bohemian (22.73%)
Munich (3.41%)

26.7g Hallertau Traditional Pellet @60min
5.3g Pride of Ringwood @60min

A n easy recipe to reduce any chance of me f'ing it up. Plus, it tastes nice. Punter had this one tap at the HBS. Very nice.

Another Landlord last night after work. The last batch lasted 2 days whilst out camping with mates and the kegs of golden ale didnt last long either.

Used top cropped 1469 and this morning it was trying to climb out of the fermenter.

Will be serving this through a handpump at the AABC clubnigh in a few weeks along with a rye victoria golden ale I'm brewing tomorrow night.

Doc, do you find any problems with rye gumming up your mash/sparge? Is a bucket-load of rice hulls required? Been thinking of starting to play with rye and seeing what it can do but want to make sure my pillowcase will actually be able to drain.

Nice work Jelly-man. Keep us appraised of how it goes; hopefully it works for you like it does for me!
