Doc, the 'z' in those words is considered 'proper' in the US, and if you did not use that spelling you would be the one chastised for it... just different sides of the coin IMHO. No offence taken at all

Aussies are just as bad with our colloquialisms and slang but our spelling and pronunciation is for all intents and purposes the same as British English (regional accents not withstanding). I lived in England for 2 years and there are many regions where the language spoken has no resemblance to English. Take the Geordies for instance, I couldn't understand a word they said.

I publish in American journals and am required to Americanise my writing for that. Unfortunately many of their journals are more widely read and respected so i choose to publish there to get a wider audience. I simply switch the spell checker over to 'US' English. I don't like it but I do accept its different.

Not sure what browsers people use to view the forums but with firefox I have a built in spell checker that saves me from too much embarrassment due to my fingers not keeping up with my brain.

I am a grammar nazi though, I was taught to speak correctly (public school education in the country before anyone takes a swipe at me) and that is simply an extension of correct grammar so I am anal about my spelling.

Very true Spills, some posts are so difficult to read I give up before I get to the point of them and as rwh mentioned, paragraphs help to separate individual points.

Right, off to do some real work instead of picking on peoples grammar. Just be thankful I am not a moderator, this forum would be a very different place!

Yes, you can install other dictionaries from here. Then you need to choose which one to use by right clicking on a text entry field and choosing the dictionary to use from the Languages submenu.

I just found an example of a widely used (more so in speech than in text, and increasingly more common in the youth) word that really irks me. It is the use of 'use' to mean 'you all' or 'everyone as a collective' as in the phrase "Do use think I could use this item in my brewing?".

Keg, if I may make so bold- why are you sitting up at 12.42 am. in the morning looking for words that annoy you?

At times I have the unfortunate duty to be part of my company's recruiting process.

Recently we have received a number of job applications and C.V.'s from university graduates (Comp Sci & the like) with "SMS" abbreviations in them. Naturally enough these end up in the shredder without a second look.

It astounds me that anyone would think it was acceptable to do this in a job application.

i was doing my usual meandering around, came across some new posts in here.

it was actually 1:42 if i recall - the reason being that it is now 10:18, and i have just woken up (laptop is handy).

i have an 11:30 start for work today

i dont like peoples use of double negatives either....

"He dont know nothing about that"...

If he doesnt know nothing, then he must know something?
