Tried a James Squire Porter on Fri.
Not bad, especially for some one who generally prefers pale Lagers & the like.
I wouldn't have it as an every day drinker but nice for something different.
Made me even more keen to put the Chocolate Malt I bought, into use.
Just waiting to get some more Munich & a bit of Aromatic malt to have a go at a Honey Porter.
I know Wassa's honey porter is a cracker but an AG version has gotta be worth a go
I just can't bring myself to buy a kit again now that Ivé got Kg's & Kg's of grain in the shed. Bloody dark side!!
Mick.

First pot was my new on tap Centenial/cascade summer pale ale....
Now the sun is setting I've just poured an oatmeal stout.
Might finish the night on a Belgian dubbel though........
Beer on tap is hard to live with LOL

I've made this robust porter a few times, very, VERY tasty -

Thx Doc,
Looks nice but I would almost have to start from scratch with the ingredients for that one.
Will put it on the long term list?
Mick.

Are you after a brown porter or robust porter.
I make a brown porter more regularly. This is one i made back in 08 -

I've made it a few times since with brown instead of amber malt (I prefer brown to amber these days). The last version had a mix of medium and dark crystal malts and more chocolate and no amber. Also played with a few of the other liquid english yeast strains (as well as Coopers) although you could get away with Nottingham.

Where do you think the JS porter fits - Brown or Robust?
Its a pity you missed the JS Rum Rebellion Porter a few years ago Mick. IMO it was better than their standard porter.

The standard porter is pretty nice on tap. Not a fan in bottles.

Last dark ale/porter that I made, I accidently grabbed the choc wheat out of the freezer instead of the choc chit. Was a good mistake to make as its sits pretty nicely in a porter.

Yeh the Prince of darkness is a bit closer to what I'm think'n of.
Although the Choc malt I have is the lighter one - Thomas Fawcett - 500 - 800 EBC
Looking for something like a Tooheys old with out too much acrid, scortched flavours. kind of rounded & malty with a hint of honey.
This is the original recipe I came up with.
http://homebrewandbeer.com/forum/viewto ... 11&t=10250
But it didn't get too many responses when I threw it out there for scrutiny.
Since then Ivé been building up & splitting some 1318 london Ale iii.
Use it in a batch on the weekend, it went off like a frog in a sock!
Still trying to get my hands on some 1272 as well.
(ditching my old supplier for Ross was a good move!!)
grain in stock - BB Pale Ale Malt - Light Choc - Carra malt - Pale crystal - wheat malt & flaked maize.
Ordering later this week - Munich 1 & Aromatic. (should look at some Brown malt too eh!)
Mick.

My mild from a few weeks ago again, seems it just needed more time to mature.

The last bottle of No.55 Munton's Nut Brown Ale, as part of my plan to get rid of all my K&K and extract brews and start afresh, with some BIAB beers.
It's actually surprisingly good for a 5.5-year-old beer (bottled on June 6, 2005!). Nice chocolately taste, decent head and quite smooth really.
Not a bad beer, even at this age.
Cheers,
Oliver

That sounds like a cunning plan Oliver. I can just imagine - "Umm honey, I don't really want to drink so much beer but I need to clear the old stock".
I reckon you should keep a few to compare with your AG brews.

Had a Landlord as brewed by Rotten yesterday while watching the cricket.
I have PMed him with a full review but felt i a more public 'thanks for a very nice beer' was needed.
Quite pale in colour but apart from that it was a very impressive beer. Malt and hops were in balance. That in itself is quite an achievement, more so from someone who hasn't been AG brewing very long.
Went down a treat watching the poms dropping like flies. Anytime you want to send me a bottle of your beer don't hesitate!

Thanks drsmurto, I knew you'd at least think it was drinkable.
Let us know what you think about version 2 when it's ready.
Cheers

No beer today.
Opened a bottle of Tim Adams 2000 Shiraz. Very very nice. Cellaring wines is definitely worth it.

My first simple all-juice cider. Exceeds expectations. Don't know if its even worth carbonating it, its more than acceptable straight from the fermenter after 2 days cc. Next round will have a bottle of Nudie in the mix to add a bit.
