I was thinking along the lines of a syringe with the rubber stopper/seal inside. Someone would have to invent it, but have a circular keg with a round syringe style "Force feeder" IE when you pour the beer, you could force the rubber/lever down to keep the oxygen out and maintain a small cavity between the beer.

So basically, brew beer, rack beer into keg with 180g of dex or lower and when pouring beer, when it stops to a trickle, push the "Syringe" down.

Probs I forsee, lubrication of the rubber (Dries out) and geting the beer into the fermenter (you could put a one way valve on top of syringe) and lift syringe as beer goes in.

I may be talking out of my arse, or it could be the beer talking.

Thoughts?

It does sound like a bit of a hassle :)
But it sounds alot like the idea behind the product in kooks previous link.

Oxygen is bad & as far as I can see there's not many options, to do it on the cheap, other than consuming the whole volume relativley quickly - & I mean 1 session. I have heard of hand pump party setups used in the US - Apparently once Oxygen hits the beer it's stale within 12hrs or so.

IMO the easiest thing to do is naturally carbonate in a keg & use a sodastream setup, with a ball valve, using just enough pressure to serve the beer.

I agree with you chris.. The longer I typed the more I thought........bit hard.

Sodastream would be easier, kegs even easier, but not natural carbs as you stated.

Ben was brand new and we have to take that into account. He does not know that his question was wrong or "stupid", that is why he asked it. He did not know, that's how we learn. I know it sounded crazy to some, but hey, we all do stupid things....I know I have, like travelling at 215kph in a Two Door 77Ford, but that's another story............

How's this for a solution:

1. Brew beer in fermenter as normal until finished.
2. Rack to a cube with a tap. One of those fresh wort thingos with a tap fitted would be perfect.
3. Add sugar to carbonate. Something like a cup of dextrose would be about right.
4. Here's the good part: Modify the cap like this: hose -> bag -> blowoff tube.

Image

Then, once fermentation is complete, close the tap at the top, leaving the bag filled with CO2. Note that the bag would have to be at least as big as the fermenter. Then, as you take beer out the bottom, the CO2 would be drawn in to replace it.

Wouldn't work as well because it wouldn't collapse. So air would be introduced into the gas vessel, and while the CO2 is heavier than air and drawing it from the bottom might be satisfactory, I still think you risk mixing oxygen into the gas you're drawing into the headspace of the beer.

Those bags you can buy to vacuum pack bulky clothes items in would probably work well. They're designed to have the air sucked out of them with a vacuum cleaner, so they'll be airtight.

Simple solution. Put down brew as normal. Once airlock bubbles all the o2 out, place a large balloon over a tube to fit hole in lid. Balloon fills with co2 only. Once brew finishes you can remove beer from fermentor without drawing air back in. The co2 inside balloon will travel back into the fermentor via air pressure on the balloon. You will need a large balloon. :shock: or just bottle it and enjoy it properly. :D

That would only work for a day or so unless you got a special heavy-duty balloon. I'm sure we're all familiar with balloons deflating over time from when we were kids... ;)

In theory of course :D Everything has to be airtight. This is why im scheptical about using gladwrap as a lid because like a balloon is slightly porous, so is gladwrap.
