I've just found, hidden in a cupboard at work, an electric urn, which I plan to borrow this weekend to brew (BIAB again).
Looking to formulate a recipe this arvo, and realised that I never recorded the mash volume of previous brews. I measured the strike water volume and weighed the grain, but never recorded the mash volume.
Does anyone know the volume of 1kg of cracked ale malt when mashed?
Looking to best use the volume of the urn, while still sticking with my 3l to 1kg ratio approx.
Thanks

What is the volume of your urn?

Reason: So it would make a bit more sense.

Didn't your mother ever tell you not to answer a question with a question?speedie wrote:how much volume does the urn have

I don't know what you changed, but nice moderating Greg
Re: Mash volumes
Beersmith will tell you what the total volume of the mash tun needs to be if you put in a recipe.Planner wrote:I've just found, hidden in a cupboard at work, an electric urn, which I plan to borrow this weekend to brew (BIAB again).

Urn is just over 20l.
Planning on doing a concentrated boil, and then diluting

Re: Mash volumes
20L will be cutting it fine for a full 20L batch.
The max you will be able to boil is ~18L.
Loss of say 3-4L over an hour boil plus maybe 1L loss to trub gives you 13-14L (ish).
You will have no problem doing a BIAB in this sized urn as long as you dont want to make big beers.

Re: Mash volumes
Provided you have space to sparge, I think you should be okay with a full batch in a 20L urn. I did a couple of stovetop BIABs in a 19L Big W stockpot and they worked out well. Was sparging into another stockpot then using a bucket to hang the bag over afterwards to catch the drips as it drains (after having squeezed the bejesus out of it, of course.)
Re: Mash volumes
Had a play with beersmith over the weekend, and found the answer I needed. Urn project is on hold, the urn was in the cupboard for a good reason, the tap leaked like crazy. Oh well back to the gas burner and stockpot until I get a ball valve.
