Hi all,

I'm need help finding a good beer mug but cant find anything decent or anything that not too expensive.

Can anyone offer some advice on where to get a good mug.. something with a handle..

I'm not sure weather glass, ceramic or pewter is the go.. so if anyone knows anything about steins / mugs any advice on them would also be appreciated.

ALSO .. i'd been keen on seeing some pics of users steins / mugs so post em if you have them

I generally use a nonic pint glass for drinking although i have a few pewter and glass mugs.

I prefer glass so i can see my beer, I spend time making it look as good as it tastes.

If you want a ceramic german stein with a lid check out antique shops. I saw a few locally for $45 and was very close to buying one.

Have a look at ebay too, you can usually find something on there!!

Most of HBS's I've visited had a reasonable collection of glass pots/schooners/handles (make choice on location) available. Mostly the "dimpled" texture for about $5. Sizes range from 285 - 500ml.
Picked up a couple of pint versions from our local $2 shop a while back, bought for my 40th party - in case I fell over (I wouldn't break anything expensive)
Kids bought me a 500ml "pot" for fathers day so that's what I'm currently using.

Glass is what I'm after for the same reasons, but I wouldnt mind something with a design.. good advice on the antique shops, no reason i cant have a couple i spose.

I've had a look on the bay .. the glass ones I've come across are around 450ml.. looking for something with more volume. Did see some steins from Germany but postage of these were 45 bucks from memory yikes!

Were the pint versions dimpled also? I might check them out if so i like that look.. kind of old school

Andale is a pub suppy shop which is where i scored my nonic pint glasses from for less than $3 each.

Yes they wre dimpled , both G&G and Sunbury Homebrew had them last week for about $4-$5 (not much use to you in Dapto I know).
Check out the reject and $2 shops, the couple I bought were labelled as pints but were actually about 500ml, dimpled and handled for $2 each.

Also check out hospitality supply shops. Some can have a good range, depends on what demand they have from bars and restaurants.

If you're doing this, then check the bottom of the mugs. SWMBO and I like to pop into antique shops quite a bit and a lot of the ceramic steins that I've come across are knock-offs that are being charged at the full rate. It will clearly say "JAPAN" on the base if it's from Japan (most common country of origin I've seen) and you'd want to be paying quite a bit less than $45 for one of those.

I got a 'HTFU' stein from a smokeshop for fathers day, or I bought a pack of 4 Pilsener glasses from BIG W years ago that are still going strong, - 1.

While we're on this topic. Glass is my preference but for camping and the like I prefer non-glass. I picked up some large clear plastic (hard, crystal clear plastic- is it PE) mugs but due to the base they're not super stable. Was looking at some pewter mugs at the op-shop. Didn't get them because of the appeal of a clear drinking vessel but thought pewter may have other advantages?

What are people's preferences for non-glass?

I have a pewter mug (my 21st mug) for camping trips, stays colder for longer and i can drop it with no worries about breaking it.

I also have plastic half pints that have the volumes for a standard drink on the side. From the relevant government department so presumably a freebie.

I "aquired", or more accurately SWMBO did (it was her handbag) a couple of clear plastic "handle" pots a few years back from one of the local nightspots. They look exactly like glass, but don't cause too much damage when the ferals whack one another. Got them in the camping gear.

Big W do ceramic beer mugs with any pic you want on them for about $25 from memory too. I'm getting a beer mat made up for my bar with my beer logo on it currently from them. You can order it and upload all pics online and get it delivered if you wish or pick up for free.
