My beer is flat do i recararbonate and recap or just recap ?

Post by nicor »

I used glass bottles with a plastic screw cap and boiled the lining out the cap. The caps sealed enough to not allow the liquid to escape but not enough to stop the gas.

How can I remedy the problem?
(I have bought replacement caps).
Can I recarbonate with priming sugar?
If so with how much?
Can I just recap with more suitable caps?

The brew has been bottled for one month.

Desperate times call for desperate measures. This is a job for Carbonation Drops.

Nicor,

I will suggest reprinig and recapping. Basically if the bottle was not gas sealed all the CO2 will have leaked out and the yeasties have run out of food.

However, if you put sugar or dextrose in the bottle all will be lost as it foams out the top and across your bench. A carbonation drop should avoid this problem.

Also this may give you a slightly stronger brew, which may be good or bad depending on your outlook.

Good luck, let us know how things turn out.

Cheers,

Greg.

You might want to chill them before adding the drops, that will give you time to get the lids back on before you lose the contents!

Re prime and re cap

Can't speak to carbonation drops as I saw them for the first time last week and at 5 bucks for a wee bag, thats a lot of dex you can buy.

Rather than add just straight dex, I would try and make a thick slurry and chill the bottles to limit the foaming. Live with the reduced headspace or pour a wee drop out. Would have to do some math to work out the numbers.
