Last night I was out with some friends who have recently moved back from the UK. They are mainly wine drinkers, but during the course of the evening one of them mentioned how pissed off she was the other day, when she bought a 6 pack of Becks, and found out that it was brewed here in Australia under license, by our good friends at Lion Nathan. Apparently it doesn't taste the same- no suprise there.
I went to three local bottle shops, and all of them had locally made Becks. Two of them didn't even know that that the change had taken place. Acland Cellars told me they still get the odd batch of imported, but most of the time all they can get is the local version.

Has anyone else noticed this? What else are LN making locally, but still selling at a premium?

Of course, in Australia there's also Stella Artois (tap version brewed by CUB/Foster's in Melbourne) and Guinness (tap version brewed by CUB/Foster's in Brisbane).

Does this mean the tap version of Stella is different to the bottled version?

Mustn't forget that Lowenbrau is or was brewed by Lion Nathan as well (I believe).

Those are the beers that are either imported by or brewed locally under licence by Lion Nathan in Australia.

This is just crap for any supplier to locally brew an OS beer.
Anyone knows that change the water you change the brew.
Same with Scotch. I couldn't imagine Oban or Glenmorangie locally brewing - the drinkers would be outraged.
I have been buying Guiness in the pint can for years now because it is the only Guiness fully imported.
Why do they treat beer drinkers like this????

I'm sorry, but I have to draw the line somewhere. VB on tap or in a stubbie is acceptable, but in a can? Ferget it.

If in a can you can use can opener to take top off and without disturbing the contents wash paint brushes in the the can!

coz there ain't no way I'd drink the stuff!~

Well... it sort of explains things. I had thought there was a taste difference but had just put it down to mostly being blind whenever I drink Stella on top.

This is all very interesting.

Many years ago, VB was available in 750 ml steel cans. A bottle in a can as it were.

Well, one morning during the early days of my courtship with Lisa (who finally agreed to marry me about ten years later - talk about putting in the hard yards!) I dropped into the bottleshop which was across the road from her house in Prahran in order to pick up some sort of offering. (Lisa and I had decided to wag school together).

There were a number of these big cans, as they were called, in the fridge, so I picked up a couple.

During the course of the rest of the day I made a number of further trips across the road, eventually cleaning out all of the shop's stock of VB big cans, two at a time.

Here's the rub: I kept and still have one of those cans as a momento of that gloriously drunken and romantic day.

Disclaimer: This was a long time ago. I was a dedicated VB drinker. I was young and naive. You should not try this at home.

So was KB (in a gold can, hence the questionable title "Cold Gold"). As I mentioned once before on this forum, used to be able to get them in the Navy for 20cents a can in 1976. Still, petrol was that a gallon only a few years earlier. My, we have made progress haven't we?

I remember those cans, think Foster's still comes in them sometimes. Also known as "cannon shells", have drunk my fair share, but don't have such a great story as Geoff's.
