adding extras & boiling

Post by micka »

HI,

I am making a brew with a few extras including corriander and orange peel. When should i add these? Just into the fermenter when seeds are crushed etc or should they be boiled with the sugars and then strained. If boiled, how is it done. I have only done kits before and havnt boiled a thing yet. Also, how would i strain it.

Cheers

micka,

Boil the ingredients with a little malt or brewing sugar, then strain. If you do a search for "stockings" you'll come up with lots of threads about straining grains and the like.

Oliver,

Will i do any harm if i just throw the corriander seeds (crushed) straight into the fermenter before closing the lid? And do you know if i wait til later in the fermentation process before using the orange peel.

Thanks.

You'll extract a lot more taste if you boil it all up.

There have also been previous threads on the use of corriander and orange peel.

Last 10 min of boil actually, that will give bags of aroma.

Speaking of which, there is a method out there that says you shouldn't boil your hops for 60 min anyway, that you should load up for the final 10 min. It will mean using a lot of hops for the right IBU but apparently the aroma is just huge. (I know that we aren't talking hops here but I think it applies)
