Hi all , as i'm new to this caper i was just after some advice on using the PET bottles that came with yhe Coopers micro brewing kit ! Are they any good ? Are there any probs i should be aware of ?

Hi Twista....welcome to the Home Brewing family!
I used PET bottles with my first brew back on the 18th Dec & they were fine, no problems there but if you can your hands on some glass longnecks, you will never go back to plastic!!
Put an ad in a strategic place saying you want unwanted 750-800ml longnecks for home brewing & guranteed you will be tripping over them in a week or 2!!

Plastics are good for emergencies (when you run out of glass or keg space).

They are also good as they do not explode. The only major disadvantage is that they can't be used to store beer more than about a year.

beer just does not seem to last that long at my place

I haven't had any problems with my coopers pet bottles. However I'm a newbie and I haven't tried glass yet (can't get enough) and I don't think I will. I'm going straight to kegs (when I get the $$$ together), I dislike bottling :p Also it's so much cooler to have a tap, you look much more hardcore when you mates come round for a beer

Thanks all , i've been collecting little creatures stubbies and will try these along with some glass long necks that i am scrounging and some PET's just to compare with my next brew !!

A full set up (including a few "spare" kegs will cost around 500-600). To do a full set up (including chest freezer conversion etc) seems to work out at 1500 all new.

I personally got lucky this Christmas- my GF's father gave me an old 18gal (81L) tooheys keg. It's in perfect working order too!

Yeah that seems to be how it goes. Also it's pretty easy to get 2nd hand bar fridges that are only a year or two old for <=$50. Hint: watch the uni ad boards at the start and end of semester.

I'm killing myself b/c I gave away a perfectly good bar fridge just before I got into brewing

I bottle into PETs , haven't had any problems with them .
I agree that it's only for short-term storage (less than a year)
I do bottle in glass four 745ml glass bottles every batch I make so I can try them after a few years .

Jack I put mine together for $800 that was 2 taps, pluto gun, lines, connectors, reg, 5 kegs, panel adaptors, and snap locks.

You need to shop around and be willing to buy bits and pieces at different places.

For kegs the cheapest I have seen them is ebay from this mob.

Why is it that all ebay longneck auctions are either in NSW or QLD. I can't pickup there when I live in Melbourne.

I would buy them full of beer, but I just can't stomach CUB crap!

Buy the coopers, they are in a crown seal now

The new Coopers roll top long necks are absolutley outstanding. Is doesn't hurt too much emptying them either.

I have a relitivly young coopers lager. Some I bottled into the coopers PET bottles and some into glass. Sampling Glass then Plastic in one sitting, I feel th glass conditioned beer is a lot cleaner tasting than the PET beer. The PET bottle were new and the glass was an old coopers pale stubbie.

Anyone else noticed this or am I being silly?

I bottle in both and haven't noticed any difference

Just pour into a glass & enjoy .................. all good
