I've tried it a few times. I buy about 200g from market(rolled oats). Steep for about 15 mins. I found the stout a lot smoother and creamy. Didn't notice any flavour change.

Thanks bobbioli.
So no real flavour, just improved mouth feel and head retention ? Which i could probably get from powdered corn syrup.
Are rolled oats the same as normal porridge oats ?

It's cheaper to use rolled oats than maltodextrin by a big margin, the oats costing $1.50,maltodextrin for 500 grams is $7.00

I think oats in oatmeal stout actually replace a lot of the hop flavour so they must impart some taste. Don't know for sure as my oatmeal/imperial stout is way too green to try as yet.

any of you guys got a nice little recipe for the oats once you're done soaking and straining? I put sugar, salt, jam etc into the mix stuck it in the oven to try n make bikkies. Didn't quite work but not bad. Just hate to see them wasted.
cheers
