Worst homebrew advice you've had ...
Hi guys,
What's the worst bit of homebrew advice you've ever had?
I think I would have to rate this pearler that the former owner of a homebrew shop in Geelong, Australia, gave Geoff and I:
"After you bottle your beer, put it somewhere where sunlight can shine on it and gas it up nicely."
Now, as we all know, heat and light are the enemies of beer, and gassing up doesn't have anything to do with light.
I was a novice when I received his advice. Thank god I didn't follow it.
Any other contenders for worst homebrewing advice?
Cheers,
Oliver

A long in the tooth hermit that came into town and bought about 50 cans of the cheapest malt available and fired it up in 45 gallon batches (4 at a time) He was happy

"Listening to someone who brews their own beer is like listening to a religous fanatic talk about the day he saw the light" Ross Murray, Montreal Gazette
" You put too much water in the airlock "
" Wait till it touches the green mark on the hydrometer before you bottle"
( this advice was for all kit beer )
" only use your bottles a few times and throw them out, they do go bad "
" Keg's are great - once fermentation is done you gas it and can drink it the same day "
Some of this advice comes from a person that in the winter will use low temp yeast and put a heat belt on it - and yes dumps many batches of beer and can't figure out why
Too much more to list ...

Yep! Had these ones.Schooner wrote:" You put too much water in the airlock "

I was also told to:
"Pour your beer THEN mix it with a teaspoon of sugar before drinking" - a workmate's definition of priming.
"Two months? It would be off by now. You should have drunk it after five days" - the SAME DUDE.....
Jesus is coming - look busy

OMG!! I have gone to the Geelong HBS......I'm trusting that the owners have changed hands, 'cause the guy I had was quite good!Oliver wrote: I think I would have to rate this pearler that the former owner of a homebrew shop in Geelong, Australia, gave Geoff and I

1/ Relayed to me by a friend,
All you need is a can and a kilo of sugar. If it is gassed too much mix it with 100ml of cold water for each schooner. Bloody beautiful mate!
2/ Although this is not advice, it was from a HBS owner (I will admit the shop had been recently purchased and is run by this guys wife , but it doesnt get much better from her) :
"What do you do with the grain mate, just chuck it in the fermenter with the can and the sugar?"
