I brewed this up the other week and it smelt very smokey out of the tin. I bottled it the other day and was surprised at how smokey it still smelt. I'm wondering if I made a mistake investing in this beer. Any comments?

Dont even think about opening 1 for about 6 weeks, the smokey flavor will be a bit more subtle.

IMHO, the esb smoky belgian ( 3kg tin ) is better than the Yukon.

In that thread, I was a bit shocked by the flavour, but I have now come to love it. I reckon it has a more intense flavour than the Yukon.
I found the Yukon to taste more like charcoal, and the ESB to taste more like food - bacon and eggs.

Its all very interesting :P

Smoked beer, is just beer that's been burnt to the bottom of your kettle.

I dont think You can make egg and bacon smoke flavour by just burning malt........ :?

Well I gave this beer the taste test. It's ok. I wouldn't mind trying a big thick stout with a bit of this smokey flavour.

Tipsy,

Check out my No.26 Dockside Smoked Stout. The way I made it (can of Yukon and can of stout) was a really big beer that wasn't exactly easy drinking. It was VERY heavy.

If you want a stouty smoked beer, I would be inclined to make the Yukon Brown Smoked Ale with half a kilo of dark malt and perhaps 250g light malt and 500g dextrose. Some extra hops might help things along. Perhaps 15g of Fuggles, boiled for 10 mins?

Let us know how you go.

Cheers,

Oliver

Thanks Oliver, I will definitely give that a go, I just have to do a few lagers first to take advantage of the weather. So many brews so little time.

Just put a yukon in with 400gms malt ( end of a pack) and 600gms dex, ive heard mixed reports on here and i just had to try one for myself, Apparently it smells like BBQ bacon but when i whacked it on to boil i reckon it smelt like soya sauce  Hope it doesnt taste like that, if it tastes like bacon and eggs then i might make it my breakfast brew

I've got to say Lethal, that I've got a lot of these still to drink and I always seem to push the bottles aside for something better.
