Hey guys

the old bloke running this joint has his "kits" of liquid malt extract in plastic jars with seperate "something" hops in liquid form with varying degrees of bitterness, then add your dried malt/corn/dex/finishing hops to that from there...

he gave me a try of one of his brews (an english bitter) & I thought it was sensational!

what exactly would you call these sorts of brews, where you start with just malt extract and hops & make it from there?

I guess it's like he's done the grain for you & it's half way between making beer from scratch & using branded premade kits?

I'm going to try some of his gear for sure.

I would call it extract brewing. Sounds the same as any other can of extract you can buy. "something" hops in liquid form sounds like isohop to me.

yep, that's it - Isohops

I'm only a n00b with brewing so I wasn't sure on the terminology.

"The old bloke from Townsville." This could be the start of a new brand-line.

Its a kit brew.

Extract brewing is when you buy the malt and hops ( plus whatever )and boil them up yourself, making your own beer.

What he is doing is the same as what coopers do...

Sounds like extract to me.
Theres no way i'd be buying a plastic jar of unhopped extract and just throwing it in my fermenter with a bag of sugar and isohop! You would have to boil the extract to kill any nasties that may have got into the not so airtight jar. Who knows the sanitation practices of this HBS owner.
And if you went this route, I'd ditch the isohop and use real hops, then you can pick the flavour/style/bitterness you want
