Grolsch bottles, Melbourne

Ok, I know I just got a bottle capper for my birthday (2 even! That's what happens when you hint to too many people), but when I saw these Grolsch bottles on eBay I couldn't resist.

I ended up buying 10 lots of 5, for $50. Bargain in my opinion, as these bottles retain their value very well, and tend to me more expensive in highly populated areas such as Melbourne and Sydney.

There are still 20 lots of 5 left! I unfortunately have no more money, but I'd love for someone else on this forum to snap them up.

I was fretting over buying those extra bottles today ($50 I can't afford, ouch!), but I'm pretty confident I can at least get their value back (if not double it) if I decide to sell them later on eBay. And if I get into kegging, that'll be one way to fund the transfer over, with over 100 grolsch bottles when I pick up this lot

I've started collecting Schwelmer Pils bottles. They are brown- beats those skunky green bottles; 500ml- unlike those 473.896474ml bottles; and the beer is pretty damn tasty. And they are only $3.75 at Dan Murphys- full.

i'm sure your "Schwelmer Pils" bottles are great, just as Grolsch bottles are too!

I've been collecting those Pils bottles too - they're pretty awesome. The 4 pack from Dan Murphy's is $13 or $14 from memory, and the beer is tasty

Btw, 3 of my 50 grolsch bottles were missing their swing top seal part. Check over your bottles carefully when you pick them up! Replacements can be found at Brewcraft for $2 I believe.

For swing lid washers try $16.50 per 100 at TCB.

You can find the seals and caps at most homebrew stores!!

Those seals don't just fall off! Some moron has been at them!

Same as in local Big W yesterday. Some moron(s) had removed half the keypad buttons from a couple of laptop PCs on display!

Ha! Ha! Ha!

Problem is, as you have found out Cat, it is the end user who pays for the stupidity of these morons!

Green bottles are useless in preventing the hops becoming 'light struck' but I'd still use nice looking green bottles, I was thinking I'd wrap around a couple of layers of red cellophane . Red + green = Brown.

The hops can then have a sigh of relief .

Yeah I was wondering about that.

Do you reckon clear or green bottles out of direct sun are fine?

Or is it bright light from indirect sun that can damage just as much?

I have a lot of small and large softdrink bottles, but i'm a bit warey of using them. I was thinking if I was going to use them I'd wrap them in newspaper until I put them in the fridge

I have 600 grolsh bottles

have been brewing for 6 years , 100 batches up last week

yet to have a light struck beer , if shunky ( like a skunk -- hard to knwo what this is like in Australia ) is the taste to look for

I keep my beer in a windowless garage

lot of beer in green bottles , some in clear

maybe just an urban myth

Its not if you want to find out sit one or two of your hoppy beers were it will be exposed to direct sunlight for a couple of weeks and see what happens.

Let us know what happens. What different flavours/aroma you get. If you are willing to risk the beer use 8 bottles a sample two every week to see how it progresses for a month.
