I was recently at a party and I had the pleasure to have a drink with several I suppose you could call them professional brewers/Chemists (most retired now). That in itself was a very interesting experience. One thing I did pick up was that storing beer in green bottles is bad for the beer, they did go into exactly what happens but thats not the reason for this post. They mentioned that green is just as bad as clear bottles which I didn't know. When I asked that breweries around the world must know this so why did they do it, the answer was marketing, marketing took precedence over everything.

Anyway I just found this interesting and I thought some of you might too, as I bet a lot of people use green bottles but would never touch clear glass even though they both have the same issues.

i'v got a few greenies, i'v got no problem with them, just make sure there out of light and they should be fine, a friend of mine has some really light colored green bottles, i don't think i'd use them, thats just me tho. i'v never had problems with light struck beer all my bottles are kept in the back room cupboard i'm the only one who goes in there

Yeah, it's all about the wavelengths of light that the glass transmits. Brown glass filters out the right ones to protect the hop oils. The others transmit that light, and thus may leave your beer vulnerable to light.

Most of my bottles are brown, but I keep the other bottles around for the purposes of giving away or whatever. The brown crown-seal longnecks are the rolls royces of my collection

The best bottles are the Schwelmer Pils bottles. 500mL, brown, swingtop.

When I can work out how to get the fridge light to turn off when I shut that door, I'll use more greenies!

I'm kidding! I use some greens but they are all stored in teh dark anyhoo

I use some heineken stubbies and they are fine, like the others said just dont store them in sunlit rooms and they are fine, this also applys for clear bottles.

Agree with you Chris. Only bottle in Schwelmer swingtops, although I do have a carton of Grolsch green swingtops in case of emergency. Due to my stirling efforts in keeping consumption in line with home brewing production, I have not yet had to resort to using these emergency containers.

So very easy at bottling time, too.

Most of my bottles are green Cascade Premium Light stubbies (coz that's what Dad drinks when he's not drinking my homebrew). I've never had a problem with them, but then again I'm careful and keep them under the house where there isn't reall that much sunlight.
