Just brought coopers Larger from Coles was on special $9.50 if I remember correctly. Anyhow a mate was telling me to just use 1kg plan sugar. And that's all... Im kind of new to it all, I normally buy the kit with all the dextrose and hops all together. Would it be advisable to try it out or am I getting a bum steer

If you're getting it from Coles just get a kilo of Coopers BE#1 or BE#2.
Plain sugar will do the job, but not nearly as well as BE#1 or 2.
To take it a bit better again, try adding Coopers Light Dry Malt 500gm also available at Coles.

Never use 1kg of sugar (in beer) if you can avoid it. 1kg of malt is the way to go.

Hi Homebrew experts.
The cheapest Malt I can get are liquid light and dark malts. - $4.70 per kg.
Could someone give me an equivalency relating to 1kg of dry dextrose as far as it's fermentable sugars go?
I"ve heard liquid malt is 20% water, and malts are only 80% fermentable.
Based on that 1kg of liquid malt is equivalent to 640grams of dextrose.
But is that correct?

I have done the lager with 500g of Coopers LDM and 500g of Dex, works pretty well.
Now I only use 1kg or more of malt for the flavour and mouthfeel. 20g (4 teaspoons) of Saaz Dry Hopped at rack, if you rack, is nice for aroma and a bit of taste.
Or if you do not rack chuck in after 3 days and leave for say 5 days or until you are ready to bottle.

If its your first kit try the brew enhancer 1 first it'l give you a gauge to go back to but be warned once you play malt you'll never go back!! stay away from sugar unless priming good luck your about to find yourself a new addiction!
