Bought a can of the Mountmellick as I thought it was a quality kit. Not sure if it is just me but the packaging seemed cheap and nasty - label was held on by small bit of tape and the yeast was a cheap looking silver pack with only the marking "RAB" - no date, weight or anything (dodgy, dodgy). Did not look anything near the quality of packaging on the coopers, cascade etc. Is this normal for the muntons range?

At $20 for the kit hopefully it is quality inside.

Anyways, the recipe I was intending for it was:
1.8kg Muntons Mountmellick Stout Kit
250 gm DME
1 cup steeped crystal malt
Maybe some fuggles in boil for 5 min

All made up to 11.5L to give an extra stout around 7%. Any suggestions?

I have never made this one but i can tell you that the muntons that i have done have all been top knotch, im sure you wont have any problems with any of them

Thanks Leigh, just the quality of the packaging felt like a relable. Plain silver yeast pack with RAB and the tape holding on the label

none of the munton's kits I've done have had dodgy labels, though yeah their yeast is in pretty plain silver packets, unless you get premium gold yeast

Possibly the label came off on its own and they had to stick it on, most good kits labels will come off very easily cos most homebrewers strip the label before soaking in hot water, if it is actually muntons which im sure it is then it will be fine, wouldnt hurt to change the yeast for a safale or muntons gold though

Got the s-04 for it... at 11.5L would you guys add the malt and crystal?
I was going for an extra stout style. Hoping for a creamy white head and not sure how crystal or extra malt will affect that.

The Mountmellick kit is the only stout I have made in the recipe:

1 x M.mellick kit
1x Brewcraft Stout Kit converter
500g ldme
kit yeast
23L

Will be happy to fork out another $20+ for the next kit, as it is a damn tasty drop, worth repeating. Enjoy.
