I would halve the crystal60, if you think LCPA is bitter then modify this? tastes lice LCPA with some stout in it??? maybe i just brewed it wrong?

I don't think LCPA is bitter - it's a good beer. The bottled SNPA that I drank in the US was more tart than LCPA - I suspect that they may even use a hop like Chinook or Perle to bitter the beer with. I prefer the results that Northern Brewer gives in conjunction with Amarillo and Cascade...2oz / 56g of Cascade at flameout is quite a bit - I'd be careful you don't invite grassy notes to the beer...

The small choc malt addition also gives a touch of grain bitterness and colour to the final product.

As much as I admire the Northern Brewer team (yes, I'm a happy customer of theirs), I tried this recipe and it turned out a nice APA, but IHMO, it wasn't a clone of SNPA...once again, YMMV.

Cheers,
TL

The Northern Brewer "Team"? IIRC the recipe was formulated by a Northern Brewer Forum member along with the SN brew master.

Thanks chris i wanted to put the link in there but didnt know how. Thanks to beerfan for posting the recipe. Hey trough whats with the grassy notes thing? something with the hops?

Yeah, some pellet hops when added at flameout or dry hopped are known to give off undesireable grassy flavour notes to the beer - culprits include cascade and saaz. I do like late additions of cascade but I typically keep it to around no more than 16g for a 21L batch.

Cheers,
TL (NB Forum member).

As I said, Beerfan's recipe is a good APA, but do you really expect the SN Brew Master would readily provide the exact SNPA recipe to the brewing community???
Without wanting to split hairs Chris, I made a generic reference to the NB website/forum/community...Whatever, let's have a beer.

TL

on a side note i'm thinking of culturing up the yeast in the SNPA for a IPA i'm doing on suday instead of using a pack of US-56 (US-05) good/bad idea?

Can't hurt, even though I **think** it is brewed with Cal Ale (US56, 1056 etc)

Great pic Phill!
I never thought I'd be getting beer pangs at 9am!
I've got a keg of steam beer in the cellar - I'm working on a clone for anchor and I'll tap the keg this weekend to see how it turns out.

TL

TL - i'v got kai's paddelsteamer (steam beer) in secondary at the moment, not sure how it compaires to anchor, altho i'm having quite a few problems in the brewery at the moment. fridge playing funny buggers and way lower efficiency than expected so i think my version will be pale in comparason to kai's original

gregb - i thought it would be 1056, i think i will culture it and keep the saf-ale as a back up

cheers

Kai's steam is excellent - I hope to produce something similar but I'm going for a more traditional amberish variant with tons of NB to give that woody flavour profile.
I see you've got a Kilkenny on the chalk board! Good time of the year to put some down...

Thanks for figuring that out Chris...

I must admit that I've never visited their website and that's ignorance on my part, but I still maintain that the basic ingredients don't deliver the same experience as they do in the bottle. So, it must be a combination of when, how and how much of each ingredient they use and other things such as water profile, yeast strain etc etc. Oh and the fact that their brew setup is a $hitload better than mine!

Cheers,
TL

Hey I'm sure your recipe makes a good APA TL  but I'm not sure if I'd calling it a SNPA clone... looks more like a TLPA to me
