I made a pretty good pale ale with a tin of Cascade Pale Ale, 1kg malt, 25g Cascade hops and SAFale04 yeast.
I haven't tried the Black Rock tins but I reckon the Cascade Pale Ale tin is better than the Coopers one.

My favourite easy pale ale so far is:

Coopers Pale Ale
1kg LDME
150g Crystal malt, cracked, steeped
100g Carapils, cracked, steeped
12g Goldings @15 minutes
kit yeast

5L boil, topped up to 23L.

I have the exact opposite opinion on the relative merits of the Pale Ale brands.

These brews would be very nice, but not a clone of commercial CPA because of the hops used. Am I right in saying that they use POR for flavour as well as bittering?

Yes, PoR is the only hop used I believe, but it's used pretty sparingly all round really.

Cooopers kit
1kg brew enhancer 2
300g LDME
100g Dried Wheat Malt
20g tettnanger hops

I've just finished harvesting my PoR hop plant and should have enough to do an all grain Coopers Pale clone with fresh hop flowers!! 8)

Cheers,

I will be cheating a bit however....I have an American Amber ale finishing primary right now - its being fermented by a blend of US-56 and Wyeast 2112 California Steam beer yeast and when I rack the amber out of the fermenter, I'll dump the fresh coopers pale wort on the yeast cake, stand back and let 'er rip!!
Repitching - a great way to guarantee almost zero lag and excellent ferments!!

Cheers,
TL
