I had a pleasant few pints with friends at the Napier last night.

There was just one problem. Although I only had beers from some of the smaller breweries, I found it all to be a bit bland. I had a pint of ale that smelled like it had something wrong with it, but none of my friends could fault it (perhaps I was just being a beer wanker - dunno :lol: ).

Either way, I fear homebrewing is seriously reducing my beer options! :cry: :lol: :lol:

I have to agree, (with the flavour that is not you being a wanker).
Haven't been brewing that long but went out for a few of the old favourites last Friday. The first 6 to 8 tasted like crap, after that they tasted ok. Not sure if i was intoxicated or just got used to the tatse.

Firstly, and to avoid any misunderstanding, I prefer the term "beer snob" to "beer wanker".

Secondly, I agree that HB can more often than not be better tasting than commercial brews, whether the latter come from mega or boutique breweries. This applies even to good quality K & K HBs brewed according to instructions. IMHO at any rate.

There are exceptions, hence my "... more often than not ...".

HB tends to have more hop flavour, it can make the commercial beers seem very poorly hopped.

I agree in general, and I especially find that most restaurants these days have a very poor beer list. Next time you look at the beer list, see how many are import or domestic lagers, and compare that to the ales. Most of the time you'll find either one ale (most often Coopers Pale), and the rest lagers, or all lagers.

I find it hard to have a beer with my meal now, because they're all soooo disappointing. :x

Last Friday I went to the Mountain Goat brewery to try their double IPA (which is fantastic), and I had one of their paddles (which is four different beers in glasses for $10). They're all bloody fantastic. I'd have to say that I like their other beers better than the hightail, so if that's the only one you've tried, get yourself down there on a Friday night. Oh, and the decor is cool too (Massive fermenters everywhere ;)).

Drinking their beers with so much hop aroma and flavour starts me thinking that I'm going to need to build a hop-back. Not another piece of equipment! :?

Mega swill beer is crap, that is, after drinking home brew for many years.
But there are still some very good beers from smaller breweries. I had the pleasure of sampling (1 or 10, I can't remember) stubbies of Two Metre Tall Dark Ale, which I would highly recommend if you can get your hands on it.
No affiliation, just nice beer.

I'm in total agreement.
Tooheys Old is about the only thing I can find at the local that I still enjoy.
(and I still remember the time when Reschs Smooth was on tap... sob sob)

We had a Mountain Goat tasting session at home and I agree - great beers. I also agree on the Hightail - great beer but it's pretty much a poorer version of the LCPA.

Also agree (agree agree agree) on the pub beers - it's rare they beat homebrew. Plus, I find it harder to hold commercial beers down than I did 12 months ago (when I started brewing). I get pissed quicker and hugover much more easy (and NO, I'm not getting old) :D

Um, how 'bout I just say I agree to everything you all just said.

It ALWAYS hurts after a big night on commercial. HB is always fine the next day.

Yup, still hurting now from last night!
Have drunk all aged brews i've made, waiting on more now (only started brewing at start of the year) so bought a large quantity of commercial piss last night.
I daren't say which one. :oops:
Had about as much as i've had on past largish sessions of my own brew but hell when i woke up this morning i nearly cried.
Think i'll lay off it till mine age, big sessions anyway.

What sucks is when mates bring over VB and drink HB.
I've got one more stubbie to go in the fridge thats going in a marinade... stuff drinking it.

I went down to the local with a mate last night, and the only thing they had on tap was , Swan Draught, Carlton Mid, Goldxxxx, and Tooheys New.
Not much of a choice for a qualified beer snob. So i asked the lovely bar maid (who was wearing only a g-string and her favorite bra) for a pint of
Tooheys new.
If it wasn't for this saucy temptress i probably whould have had two pints and gone home, but we stayed for a couple of hours and i had around 5 pints.
Now i havn't had a commercial beer for about a month because i've been enjoying the wonderfull taste of my new found hobby, but after a night on
Tooheys New i have got the worst bloody hangover i've had in a long time,
i used to drink these commercial beers all the time and would never awake with such a bad hangover after only five pints, i guess my body was just used to the preservatives and additives put in these beers.

I can enjoy a night on my homebrew with no ill side affects in the morning.
So like SpillsMostOfIt i think homebrewing is seriously reducing my beer options!
Now if i could just talk my wife into serving me pints of homebrew wearing just a g-string and her favorite bra, i would never have to go to a pub again!

I dread going out nowadays for tea / into town / or the local as the beer options are pitiful :cry:

I was in Adelaide earlier in the week for work and had some CPA with tea and when walking back to the hotel I grabbed a sixer of LCPA

Not having had it before I was really blown away - a bit pricey at $19 but well worth it for some hoppy goodness :wink:

I've been known to walk into bottleshops and walk out empty handed as i couldn't find anything worth buying. Find i can only frequent a few outlets these days as the range is not big enough at most.

Everytime we go to stock up on chard's for SWMBO, I always grab a few odd euro beers for sampling different styles.

I was in Dangerous Dan's yesterday picking up a couple of Chimay Blues 'as insurance in case my Wyeast didn't come through' and almost bought a 330ml swingtop of Schwilmer Pils.

Imagine a fleet of 330ml swingtops to accompany the Grolsch thingies.

I thought those bottles were 500mL. In fact I have a 'fleet' of them already! Great bottles, and they're brown. No dodgey green glass. And they're not 342.5656mL or whatever stupid size those Grolsch bottles are.
