What are yeast nutrients for?

Post by ADHD Curmudgeon »

I am just curious as to weather yeast nutrients improve the quality of beer at all?

Does it accelerate the production of yeast and/or the speed of the fermentation?, or are there other reasons for using them?

If you use lots of dextrose to brew then yeast nutrients will help to finish you're brew off at expected FG's.Brewing with all malt ensures you have adequate nutrients to complete the fermentation.A lot of kits are cut with sugar extracts so they don't have enough yeast nutrients to finish properly, therefore yeast nutrients are advantageous in that they add enough good stuff to finish the brew properly. :)
of course i could always take a good look at a teabone steak by shovin my head up a cows ass but im willin to take a butchers word for it?

I just read an article on danstar.com (a yeast vendor), in which they discussed the "cidery" taste attributed to using ordinary white sugar. One of the reasons the yeast guys thought using sugar (or, indeed lots of glucose, or other adjunct sugar) leads to cidery flavours is lack of nutrients.

The question was actually posted by John Palmer
A homebrew is like a fart, only the brewer thinks it's great.
