Torrefied Wheat

Hi folks....
I am just a new brewer and I have been gived a recipe for a Wheat BEer which contains "Torrefied Wheat" grains....

I can't find these anywhere.... dont even know what it is.... Can anyone help?????
And just another quickie..... would Brew Cellar Wheat Yeast be ok for a whear beer???? I am told it is exactly the same as SafWheat.

You can buy it as puffed wheat breakfast cereal in the supermarket. Make sure you get the one with no additives. you can also get it from some brew shops (Grain and Grape have it).

Thanks for that Timmy....... I was unsure if that might be it... but its about $14 a kilo, which is what I need.... Does it really make a difference to the brew???

My recipe is
Can of Blackrock Whispering wheat
1.5kg liquid wheat malt
1kg torrefied wheat
10g coriander seeds cracked.
10g dried orange peel
SafWheat Yeast
14g Saaz hops
14g Goldings hops

Can't remember what I paid for it because the GLW got it for me. Sounds in the ballpark given that it comes in 250g packs. It should be cheaper to get it from a HBS if they stock it (or try G&G).

It's meant to add mouthfeel and better head retention to a brew. I can't comment too much because the brew in question is still in the fermenter. But I did give it a taste last night and it was full-bodied but that could be because it's only 1/2 fermented...

I'd watch it with that recipe... 1kg is heaps of the stuff, and it can impart a sour/tart flavour, or so I've heard. Maybe drop it down to 500-750g.

aparently it's almost the same as using raw wheat which as RWH said can add sour/tart flavour (i'v not used raw wheat only torrified)

some of us like that tho :P

best to use a small amount on your first try (what RWH said)

ahh wheat beer, i wouldn't be a brewer without you

The Safwheat yeast isn't actually a wheat yeast, it's an old german ale yeast that they badged as a Wheat yeast because it produces a near enough result if you aren't picky. Should be fine for a first time, but in the future you might want to consider genuine liquid wheat yeasts from Wyeast or White Labs. Good luck!

I use the Sanitarium Puffed Wheat and steep with any grains I'm adding (for kit and kilo & partials) I found giving it a work over with a potato masher then letting it steep worked best. For my money, using this on lighter styles really improved the head retention.

One large box usually lasts 3 brews, so nowhere near the 1kg in the above recipe.

I usually buy normal wheat, then tell it what I am going to do to it, making sure it sees the big pot full of boiling water. That usually terrifies it plenty.

Triple your coriander, double your orange, halve your torrefied wheat and replace your Safwheat with a liquid 'Wit' yeast, which is the 400 in the White Labs range or the 3944 in the Wyeast range. The Safwheat just doesn't give you the Banana flavour that's so prevalent in wheat beers and yes, the Brew Cellar Wheat is the same as Safwheat.

Thanks for the info Danzar, appreciate your reply..... I was trying to get the 3944 yeast, but cant get it at my LHBS. I think I will mail order it from Ross at Craftbrewer.

i have tried 3 different Coles and Safeway stores and still cannot find any puffed wheat :(

You won't be dissapointed. Get your orange from Grain and Grape - they mail order any amounts, bitter peel and sweet.

If you can't find the 3944, use the White Labs equivalent which is the WLP400.
