I have about 45 PET bottles, but I am phasing them out. Having tasted the same beer from them and out of glass, I think glass wins hands down.
Here's a tip. I collect all my stubbies from my golf club, as I play twice a week. If you check the bins around the course, you will usually find heaps you can collect on the way. Other players in your group are always willing to give you their stubbies as they are emptied. Also, get friendly with your club's bar staff, they are usually happy to give you a bag full. The downside of this is, of course, that you have to clean each bottle thoroughly, but I limit myself to a couple of dozen stubbies each week to add to my stock. I have got fussy lately, and now only take Tooheys New, xxxx, or Coopers stubbies (so I can leave the capper on the one setting).
Stock so far is about 350 stubbies, but plan to build to 1000 to enable stock build up for ageing etc.

Twist-ers are OK as long as you have a decent capper. There's a bit more force required to cap them and you do run a greater risk of breaking the top of the bottle when opening it. But I've only had 2 or 3 breakages in 11 batches.

Get a quality bench capper and they will not break.

I found that the "Italian" hand style ones broke the bottles.

Since the benchcapper I have had 0 breakages in over 1000 (Minimum ) bottles capped.

i have one of those italian hand cappers with the two handles out the side. ive never had a problem with it. gives a good seal on twists and crowns

Yup, i use the twisties as well. Make sure you get a good bench capper. Also, make sure you get caps from your HB shop which suit the twisties, as not all caps are the same. I've never had a breakage from capping yet.

I've been brewing for about 9 years now. (only started to get it right when I found this site a year ago) In that time I reckon I've bottled about 13 000 bottles. Nearly all twisties. Never had a breakage since I bought a bench capper. Bench capper is the way to go. Also never found much difference in what brand of caps I use.
