Fermenting Water

Don't laugh. Looking at experimenting with fermenting alcoholic drinks for wife and daughters - those breeezers and cruisers etc costing me a fortune. Thought I'd experiment with fermenting sugars / lactose etc in water to see what I get. Thinking best to make this a s a base and add flavourings when bottling. Anyone tried anything like that yet ? Haven't got a keg system so will use bottles. Anyone got any good recipes (read successful recipes) for anything like the fizzy crap my missus & kids drink ?

If you don't use any malt, then you may wish/need to add yeast nutrient. Alternatively, you could just use a small proportion of DME.

I've never heard of any recipe like this being successful. Don't let that stop you though; I don't think it'll work, but who the hell am I!?
You could try an alcoholic GB, cider or lemonade. But a lot of people ascribe the value of an alcoholic beverage to the label on the outside of the bottle rather than the quality of the contents. Sad but true.

Just look at the number of tossers who think Crown Lager is the best beer God ever put bubbles into.
Cheers,

Check out the cider, ginger beer and lemonade threads. Plenty of good alco GB recipes, plus lots of discusisonso on alco lemonade, raspberry etc.
If you want the girly vodka drinks, water down vodka, dash of white wine and a flavour essence.

drsmurto, I think he is after "fermenting alcoholic drinks" aka fizzy crap ( self-carbonating, in fact so cocktails are no go ). I believe anything based on real vodka ( diluted with flavour added ) will hardly cost less than premixed ( you might as well be buying 80% ethanol from Dan Murphy's instead for that purpose ). I do remember one girly drink that I used to make, though - vodka mixed with cranberries then heated up and strained and some sugar added but a) it's not fizzy and b) is strong.
Funny thing you mentioned lactose .. I remember carbonated drinks based on fermented milk. That is an acquired taste and I have never tried making any myself, though .. but still.

Hi there all,
Now, the details are quite vague here but I do believe I have seen, at a brewshop not far from me, a kit of some sort that makes fizzy alcopop type drinks. I'm afraid I cannot offer many more details than that as I only gave them a passing glance but I'm sure I have seen them. Whether they are made from a spirit base or what I don't know. Sorry for the lack of decent info but it might give you a starting point.
