keg valve

Here's another stupid question from a novice. I have just been given a couple of CUB kegs. I know that I will need to get a regulator and assorted bits and pieces, but how do I get the valve out to clean the kegs and put the brew in?

You could send it back to CUB.
Did CUB give it to you, or did you steal it (if your best friend's second cousin removed gave it to you, it is still stolen)
Just as easy to set up with LEGAL keg's

Fair call but no they are not stolen or the result of any nefarious activity. I was given them by the son of an ex publican (recently deceased). They were just sitting in his dad's garage and were otherwise going to be thrown out. Fortunately he mentioned them to me before this happened. Unfortunately he never had much to do with his dad and couldn't tell me anything about the valve.

Just be careful Robbo, they "ALWAYS REMAIN THE PROPERTY OF CUB"
Even if your mate's dad died, they wernt his to start with anyway.

Robbo, hate to disappoint you but YES they are stolen. Generally called "theft by finding" i.e. I found this and have made no attempt to locate the owner.
Legally anything you find you have to make reasonable attempts to locate the owner and then take it to the police who will try to locate the owner. If they can't after 3 months then its yours. This is in Victoria, but other states, countries etc would be similar. Same goes for milkcrates bread crates etc. I think i said that the other day.

Does having a squizz around and asking someone nearby if they know to whom it belongs constitute sufficent attempt at locating the owner?

I'm very touched by the concern you have all shown me regarding my accidental stumble into a criminal lifestyle, and I am just about ready to surrender my ill-gotten booty to the authorities. However I am still curious (for purely academic reasons) to know how the valve of one of these suckers would be removed. I'm reasonably confident that officer -in-charge of my local cop shop is likely to ask me. (he being a home brewer, and a man with an eye for an opportunity. But maybe I'm being presumptuous)

Robbo,
Use the kegs, you will still get to heaven. Surely the police have more important criminals to catch. It is like burning a CD or a tape.
Just my take and I will not be held responsible if you go to jail

Robbo,
Why would you want to remove the valve ? What you would do is to fill the keg through the beer fitting (without putting gas on it). Now I know you aren't going to use these kegs, but if you were you still have the trouble of flushing the sediment and crud that often accumulates around the sides of a keg of homebrew. So yeah, between them being impractical for homebrewers and constantly being a fugitive of Mr Carlton, you'd be better off spending $70 on a corny keg.

but if you want the extra volume, find someone who can cut a the top of a corny and weld onto your 50L DIN! Just a thought

mmmmm not a term I'm usually associated with, crackpot is more normal.
BUt if you find someone who can do this, especially in Perth area let me know. I have a 50L keg, from UK (cheers Phil!) that I'm thinking of trying this with. However welding needs to be food grade stainless and bloody perfect!!!

I remember seeing one of these at the Brew Shop in Peakhurst Sydney. Doesn't help you much Grab, but yeah, it can definitely be done.

Do you have to pressure test it? (I am serious here)

Of course you would. I am thinking if it is not holding pressure, the
best thing that can happen is waste gas. Worst is something else.

for sure Dogger, that's why hte weld has to be spot on, also needs to be a "clean" weld to help keep nasties out!

Mr Dan, if you have done nothing wrong, you have nothing to fear from the Police.

Yeah, and by the time you get someone to "cut and shut" your corny fittings to your keg you'd be up for a packet I'd imagine (not to mention many a sleepless nights with all those police after you).
Corny keg, "reconditioned", $70. Much easier.
