Brewcraft Belgian Ale kit

Has anyone tried this? i was thinking having a go with a kilo LDME and 500g candi sugar?

Thoughts?

It's nice. If I'm doing a belgian ale, I'll usually use that one. Your recipe looks fine - just get yourself a good yeast.

Cheers Danzar, I'll give it a crack before i go splasing out on the brewferm kits, at $24 for 9L, its an expensive experiment.

The diablo was what i had in mind, i wanted to keg it though so i'd have to double the recipe, that's $50!!! I've been after a good Duvel clone though so it may just be worth the splurge!

Hey All,

I've also just bought a few Brewferm Products.
1. Diablo
2. Triple
3. Ambiorix

Does anyone have any suggestions on the a good yeast for these kits? The guys at the HBS thought the kit yeast was okay, but I'm open to other ideas.

Any suggestions welcome

You could try the Belgian Ale dry yeast from CraftBrewer, you could reculture the yeast from a bottle of Chimay, or you could try a Wyeast/White Labs liquid culture - 3463 Forbidden Fruit Yeast(WLP720), 3522 Belgian Ardennes Yeast(WLP550), 3724 Belgian Saison Yeast(WLP565) or the allegedly Westmalle-originating 3787 Trappist High Gravity(WLP530).

Brewferm Triple.

I did mine with 500g of purchased Candy sugar and standard yeast. It cooked solid for a week and slowed. People told me the yeast may not handle the high SG, but I thought bugger it, Brewferm wouldn't put in a yeast that couldn't handle the job, would they :?: . Mine was fine.

Having said that I have heard rave reviews on the Wyeast/White Labs liquid culture.

One big hint is do not drink them til after about 3-4 months. :D Trust me this is very difficult :lol: to do.

Improves out of sight :wink:

I nearly bought a brewferm kit not half an hour ago.

But i intend to keg so didn't want half a keg and didn't want to spend shiite loads.

I ended up with this;

ESB Blonde kit (ESB i have recently discovered http://www.esbeer.com.au)
1kg LDME
500g bought candi sugar
tettanager aroma hop pellets for aroma/taste
Wyeast belgian golden ale liquid yeast.

might do a 100g steeped crystal grain, thoughts?

I modified an Abbey ale recipe based on this kit I found on the Brewcraft website and it turned out real nice:

1 Brecraft Premium Belgian Al kit
500g dried wheat malt extract
500g light dried malt extract
500g candi sugar (home made with 500g raw sugar cooked to dark red using Ed's recipe)
12g teabag of Morgan's Saaz hops boiled with 2 cups water for 2 mins
1 sachet Munton's premium gold dried yeast

Poors a beautiful full head (think that's the wheat malt). I probably overcarbonated it a bit for the style with 2 carbonation drops per longneck, but otherwise it was pretty good. The candi sugar was dark red and the bear looks very dark, a dark brown colour with mahogonny tones held up to the light, but is quite a light beer. Left it for a couple of months before drinking. Next time I might add a kilo of LDME to get a higher alcohol content, and maybe try a different yeast and carbonate less.

A question for anyone having brewed a Belgian beer.

I like the look of SDH Brewings recipe and I want to give it a go.

I can't see myself making any candi sugar and if it's not available I was thinking of using brown sugar (500g) and possibly adding 500g and Amber Malt as well. You suggested adding 1kg of light malt extract, but I ws thinking of the Amber malt instead, it'll add the colour and a slight caramelly taste.

Do you think this'll give a similar effect?

Any suggestions greatly appreciated.

Tastes awesome, good blend of both Duvel and Leffe blonde, very nice beer.
