Has anyone discovered a way of quickly removing the plastic rings without damaging the bottles?

Slide a sharp knife carefully under the ring, keeping the sharp edge away from fingers and the bottle.

So far I have only cut myself once, and not lost a bottle.

Pair of sharp scissors with thin blades...snippety snip. However I do find that some plastic rings are really stretchy and can be pulled off easier.

Buy the caps without the tamper proof seals or remove them before you bottle.

Thanks for the tips everyone, however Dogger, isn't the ring needed to give the beer a really good seal?

Nah, the ring is only so you can see in the Supermarket if some nefarious character has poisened your pepsi.

For proof of this, re use a lid where the ring has been broken.

Don't waste your time or money (or fingers!!) cutting the rings off....as Gregb says they are for security only. As I always say, if the cap is on tight everything's alright!!!

Two reasons why I get the rings off the used bottles is so that (1) I can put a new cap on that has a seal (2) to get rid of any bugs/mildew that may have found its way underneath the ring.

The second reason is worth while thinking about as the underside of the ring is full of little nooks and crannies for bugs to get in. Although I do have a bit of a problem with mildew and mould on the outside of my bottles since I do all my fermenting and storage of bottles under mum and dad's house.
